Judge finds no evidence of eavesdropping on Guantanamo meetings

By Jane Sutton

MIAMI (Reuters) - There is no evidence that anyone listened in to confidential meetings between a Guantanamo war crimes defendant and his lawyer, at least during the last two years, a U.S. military judge said in a ruling made public on Tuesday.

Therefore, the judge ruled, there is no need to issue an order prohibiting future monitoring of attorney-client meetings.

The ruling came in the death penalty case against alleged al Qaeda chieftain Abd al Rahim al Nashiri, a Saudi prisoner accused of orchestrating the bombing of the USS Cole off Yemen in 2000. Seventeen U.S. sailors were killed when suicide bombers detonated a boat full of explosives against the warship's hull.

In a February hearing at the Guantanamo Bay U.S. Naval Base in Cuba, Nashiri's lawyers asked that pretrial proceedings be halted until they could determine whether military or intelligence agents were eavesdropping on supposedly private meetings with the defendant.

The request followed revelations that what appeared to be smoke detectors in the meeting rooms were actually microphones, and that intelligence agents outside the courtroom had cut the public audio feed in the mistaken belief that secrets were being discussed at another hearing. The microphones and the outside kill switch have since been disabled, according to court testimony.

Prosecutors and a defense technical expert subsequently searched for records of any monitoring and found none, the ruling said.

At an evidentiary hearing in June, the top legal adviser for the task force that runs the prison and the Army officer who acts as the warden both testified under oath that there had been no monitoring of attorney-client meetings during their tenure.

The judge, Army Colonel James Pohl, said their testimony was convincing and no evidence had been found to contradict it.

"While neither officer could possibly testify to what may have happened for the prior 10 years of detention at Guantanamo Bay, their testimony established beyond the required evidentiary threshold that monitoring has not occurred" since the current charges were filed against Nashiri in September 2011, Pohl wrote.

The judge said the confidentiality of attorney-client communications was sacrosanct under U.S. law and that any unlawful invasion of those conversations by any government agency "would be viewed very dimly."

But without evidence of past monitoring, the judge said, it would be superfluous and "a judicial overreach" to issue an order prohibiting future monitoring.

Nashiri's lawyers could not immediately be reached for comment on the ruling, which was dated August 5 and released publicly on Tuesday.

Apple supplier LG Display seeks to broaden smartphone client base

By Miyoung Kim and Hyunjoo Jin

SEOUL (Reuters) - Flat-screen maker LG Display Co Ltd, a key supplier to Apple Inc, said on Thursday that it was seeking to broaden its smartphone customer base, betting that diversification would bolster its second-half earnings.

The move came as the South Korean company posted a forecast-beating 53 percent rise in quarterly operating profit, as stable prices of large-sized TV screens helped counter slower growth in mobile display shipments to Apple.

LG Display follows other Asian suppliers that are looking to ease their dependence on the iPhone maker because of seasonal orders fluctuations and as Samsung Electronics Co Ltd erodes market share from Apple. Japanese display maker Sharp Corp is now aiming to boost sales to Samsung.

Like many suppliers, LG Display does not officially identify Apple as a client but analysts and sources say that most of its mobile screens are sold to the U.S. company.

"In the smartphone business, a specific customer accounts for a relatively high portion" of our sales, Chief Financial Officer James Jeong told analysts after the earnings announcement.

"We are in talks with various firms on new product line-ups ... We will gradually diversify our smartphone customers," he said, adding that diversification would help improve its earnings in the second half of this fiscal year.

Jeong did not specify the customers that the firm is talking to, but industry sources say it is hoping to ride the coattails of affiliate LG Electronics Inc, whose once loss-making smartphone business is on a firm recovery track. LG Electronics is now ranked as the world's No.3 smartphone vendor after Samsung and Apple.

LG Display is widely expected to supply super-thin and full high-definition screens for the upgraded version of LG Electronics' flagship Optimus G smartphone due out in early August.

Q2 PROFIT

LG Display, which vies with Samsung's panel unit for the top position in liquid crystal display flat screens globally, made 366 billion won ($326 million) in operating profit for its April-June second quarter. That beat the average forecast of a 304 billion won profit in a Thomson Reuters poll of analysts.

But sales slipped 5 percent from a year earlier to 6.6 trillion won, missing analysts' expectations for 7.28 trillion won. LG Display said sales fell because weaker demand for screens used in mobile devices and laptops more than offset increases in total panel shipments.

Analysts expect LG Display to enjoy upbeat sales of screens used in mobile devices in the current quarter with Apple and LG Electronics planning to launch new products.

Apple is exploring launching iPhones with bigger screens, as well as less-expensive models in a range of colours, over the next year, according to people with knowledge of the matter.

But some analysts warn that profit margins could be squeezed if Apple does introduce low-end models, while sales of premium televisions using ultra high definition screens as well as organic light-emitting diode panels remain extremely weak.

A weak global market for televisions, the biggest source of LG Display's revenue, is also expected to pressure its earnings growth, analysts say.

Daiwa Capital Markets this month cut its 2013 global LCD TV shipment growth forecast to 2.2 percent from 4.2 percent. It now expects global PC shipments, another source of major flat-screen sales, will shrink 8.8 percent this year, sharper than its previous forecast for a 4.3 percent drop.

LG Display said it expects overall panel prices to weaken in the current quarter before they start to recover later in the period.

Shares in LG Display have dropped 12 percent over the past three months, lagging a 5.6 percent drop in the broader market. The stock closed down 3.1 percent prior to the earnings announcement.

Capitol Confidential ? Health insurance rates are out

The NY Times had the drop on this, but the state?s individual health insurance rates through the new Exchange system are out. For the relatively small group of people purchasing individual insurance, rates are will actually fall, which is something of a counterpoint to predictions about other aspects of Obamacare.

A couple of interesting features about the new options ? people can shop on-line and consumers will have a choice of bronze, silver, gold or platinum, so-called plans.

Today, Governor Andrew M. Cuomo announced that the Department of Financial Services (DFS) has approved health insurance plan rates for 17 insurers seeking to offer coverage through New York?s Health Benefits Exchange, including eight new entrants into the market that do not currently offer commercial health insurance plans. Last year, Governor Cuomo took action to issue an Executive Order establishing the New York Health Benefit Exchange, which is expected to help more than one million uninsured New Yorkers access quality, affordable health care coverage.

Consumers and businesses will be able to choose among plans in four easy-to-compare metal tiers (bronze, silver, gold, and platinum) on the exchange. The plans within each metal tier will have standardized contract terms and product offerings, making it easier for consumers to truly comparison shop and encourage real price competition among insurers. Previously, New York insurers offered more than 15,000 plans that widely varied in terms of level and quality of coverage provided ? which encouraged ?competition through confusion? and made it difficult for purchasers to effectively compare plans side by side.

?New York?s health benefits exchange will offer the type of real competition that helps drive down health insurance costs for consumers and businesses,? said Governor Cuomo. ?The opportunity to choose among affordable, quality health insurance options will mean improved health outcomes, stronger economic security, and better peace of mind for New York families.?

Benjamin M. Lawsky, Superintendent of Financial Services: ?In setting these rates, we worked hard to do right by consumers and small businesses so they have access to affordable, quality health insurance. Moreover, where New York previously had a dizzying array of thousands upon thousands of plans, small businesses will now be able to truly comparison shop for the best prices. New York will continue to move ahead rapidly so the exchange is up and running for 2014.?

?The approval of health plan rates marks a significant milestone for the New York Health Benefit Exchange,? said New York State Health Commissioner Nirav R. Shah, M.D., M.P.H. ?The state continues to be on target to begin enrolling consumers and small business owners and their employees in health insurance coverage on October 1, 2013. Access to affordable, quality health care will mean better health, peace of mind and financial security for New Yorkers.?

On average, the approved 2014 rates for even the highest tier of plans individual New York consumers could purchase on the exchange (gold and platinum) represent a 53 percent reduction compared to last year?s direct-pay individual rates. The fact that these average individual rates are effectively being cut more than in half is primarily because a greater number of uninsured individuals are expected to obtain coverage in the individual insurance market ? lowering overall premiums. 1 (Note: That 53 percent reduction does not include the impact of federal financial assistance for individuals meeting certain income thresholds who are purchasing coverage on the exchange, which would lower costs even further for many consumers.)

Furthermore, despite the fact that health care costs per capita are approximately 18 percent higher in New York than the national average, the average approved rates for the benchmark individual ?silver plan? in New York would be in line with (nearly 10 percent lower)the nationwide average previously forecast by the independent, non-partisan Congressional Budget Office (CBO) for when health care reform is implemented.

For approved 2014 small group plan rates, existing premium rates do not provide a functional year-over-year comparison. In 2013, insurers offered more than 15,000 different small group plans that significantly varied in terms of the quality and level of coverage provided. This year, insurers are offering standardized contracts and product offerings within metal tiers (bronze, silver, gold, and platinum).

The approved small group rates, however, are generally lower than indicated by the estimates of other independent forecasters. The average approved small group rate in New York for the benchmark ?silver plan? is well below(nearly 32 percent lower) the nationwide average previously forecast by the independent, non-partisan CBO ? notwithstanding the relatively higher per capita health care costs in New York compared other states. Moreover, a number of small businesses will be eligible for tax credits that would lower those premium costs even further.

The following companies had health insurance plan rates for the health benefits exchange approved today by DFS. The rates approved today are subject to final certification of the insurers? participation in the exchange.
Aetna
Affinity Health Plan, Inc.
American Progressive Life & Health Insurance Company of New York
Capital District Physicians Health Plan, Inc.
Health Insurance Plan of Greater New York
Empire BlueCross BlueShield
Excellus
Fidelis Care
Freelancers Co-Op
Healthfirst New York
HealthNow New York, Inc.
Independent Health
MetroPlus Health Plan
MVP Health Plan, Inc.
North Shore LIJ
Oscar Health Insurance Co.
United Healthcare
Individuals with incomes below 400 percent of the federal poverty level ($45,960 for individuals and $94,200 for a family of four), could qualify for financial assistance that lowers cost of coverage. Enrollment for the exchange begins on October 1, 2013 for coverage that will be effective January 1, 2014.

?These plans and rates deliver on the promise that the Exchange will offer quality health insurance coverage at a price that works for New Yorkers,? said Donna Frescatore, executive director, New York Health Benefit Exchange. ?We were pleased to see that there was much interest from health plans regarding participation in the Exchange. Our partners at the New York State Department of Financial Services did a thorough job of negotiating affordable prices while ensuring that consumers will have access to the providers they need. Robust competition among health plans has resulted in meaningful choices and better options for consumers.?

###

1 It is challenging to compare existing premium rates to those that have been approved for 2014. The 2014 health insurance plans are for new products with new rates. However, plans in the existing ?direct-pay? market where individual New York consumers who do not have insurance through their employer can purchase coverage have relatively uniform terms with high standards for the level and quality of coverage provided. These existing ?direct-pay? plans are generally comparable to 2014 gold and platinum plans. For the lower-cost tiers of individual coverage (silver, bronze, and catastrophic), the approved 2014 rates would represent a even greater reduction than 53 percent compared to last year?s average direct pay rates ? however, those plans are not directly comparable to existing offerings.

Vessels grown from pluripotent stem cells able to function inside mice

Researchers at Johns Hopkins have coaxed stem cells into forming networks of new blood vessels in the laboratory, then successfully transplanted them into mice. The stem cells are made by reprogramming ordinary cells, so the new technique could potentially be used to make blood vessels genetically matched to individual patients and unlikely to be rejected by their immune systems, the investigators say. The results appear online this week in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

"In demonstrating the ability to rebuild a microvascular bed in a clinically relevant manner, we have made an important step toward the construction of blood vessels for therapeutic use," says Sharon Gerecht, Ph.D., an associate professor in the Johns Hopkins University Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering, Physical SciencesOncology Center and Institute for NanoBioTechnology. "Our findings could yield more effective treatments for patients afflicted with burns, diabetic complications and other conditions in which vasculature function is compromised."

Gerecht's research group and others had previously grown blood vessels in the laboratory using stem cells, but barriers remain to efficiently producing the vessels and using them to treat patients.

For the current study, the group focused on streamlining the new growth process. Where other experiments used chemical cues to get stem cells to form cells of a single type, or to mature into a smorgasbord of cell types that the researchers would then sort through, graduate student Sravanti Kusuma devised a way to get the stem cells to form the two cell types needed to build new blood vessels and only those types. "It makes the process quicker and more robust if you don't have to sort through a lot of cells you don't need to find the ones you do, or grow two batches of cells," she says.

A second difference from previous experiments was that instead of using adult stem cells derived from cord blood or bone marrow to construct the network of vessels, Gerecht's group teamed with Linzhao Cheng, Ph.D., a professor in the Institute for Cell Engineering, to use induced pluripotent stem cells as their starting point. Since this type of cell is made by reverse-engineering mature cells from the skin or blood, for example using it means that the resulting blood vessels could be tailor-made for specific patients, Kusuma says. "This is an elegant use of human induced pluripotent stem cells that can form multiple cell types within one kind of tissue or organ and have the same genetic background," Cheng says. "This study showed that in addition to being able to form blood cells and neural cells as previously shown, blood-derived human induced pluripotent stem cells can also form multiple types of vascular network cells."

To grow the vessels, the research team put the stem cells into a scaffolding made of a squishy material called hydrogel. The hydrogel was loaded with chemical cues that nudged the cells to organize into a network of recognizable blood vessels made up of cells that create the network and the type that support and give vessels their structure. This was the first time that blood vessels had been constructed from human pluripotent stem cells in synthetic material.

To learn whether the vessel-infused hydrogel would work inside a living animal, the group implanted it into mice. After two weeks, the lab-grown vessels had integrated with the mice's own vessels, and the hydrogel had begun to biodegrade and disappear as it had been designed to do. "That these vessels survive and function inside a living animal is a crucial step in getting them to medical application," Kusuma says.

One of the next steps, she says, will be to look more closely at the 3-D structures the lab-grown vessels form. Another will be to see whether the vessels can deliver blood to damaged tissues and help them recover.

China anxiously awaits updates after Asiana jet crash

Friends and relatives of Chinese passengers onboard the South Korean-owned passenger jet that crashed at San Francisco airport killing two and injuring 182 were anxiously waiting Sunday for news of their loved ones.

Chinese nationals made up 140 of the 290 people aboard the Asiana Airlines Boeing 777 which burst into flames after it landed short of the runway.

Among them were around 60 students and several teachers, with only one slightly injured and two unaccounted for, the Xinhua state news agency said.

The friend of one student told AFP she was waiting at San Francisco airport, frantically phoning people in China to find out details.

"My best friend is on the plane. I've been at the airport all day, trying to contact my friends in China to get updates on the accident," she told AFP over Sina Weibo, China's version of Twitter.

"I was really scared and am still trying to recover," she said. "You just never know when planes will have a problem."

Xu Da, a Chinese passenger on board, described the dramatic incident on CCTV.

"I noticed the plane was flying quite low when landing, and as it was just about to land the plane suddenly accelerated and the nose started to rise," he said. "But at the time the plane was flying extremely low already."

He added: "I felt a shock. The oxygen masks fell down and a bad smell began to spread throughout the plane. I could also see sparks in the front part of the plane."

Once the plane landed the cabin was a "mess", the back of the plane had a large hole and the kitchen there had disappeared, he described on Sina Weibo.

Xu and his wife collected their luggage and rushed out the makeshift exit at the back.

He posted photos showing people waiting outside while thick black smoke billowed from the plane, and then later from inside the airport, though the images could not be verified.

"I feel very fortunate," he wrote a little later, before posting another photo from a car leaving the scene.

Other travellers were left waiting for their flights as the airport shut down immediately after the incident before reopening a few runways.

A Chinese pilot surnamed Wang who was waiting to fly to Hong Kong told the official China News Service he was still trying to reach his friend on board.

"I haven't got in touch with him yet," he was quoted as saying.

When the plane crash-landed, he said, "the slide was released very quickly and the plane caught fire. The fire got bigger and bigger. First there was white smoke, then black smoke."

CCTV urged survivors and their loved ones to post information on the online messaging system We Chat so they could find one another.

Texas legislators to vote on abortion bill delayed by filibuster

Despite Wendy Davis' dramatic filibuster delaying Texas' abortion bill, the Republican-dominated Texas legislature is expected to support the measure which would ban most abortions for women more than 20 weeks pregnant. Just this year, 17 states passed new measures impacting abortion. NBC's Kate Snow reports.

By Matthew DeLuca, Staff Writer, NBC News

Texas legislators moved Friday to overturn a temporary victory by state Democrats and standard bearer Sen. Wendy Davis, debating a bill containing new restrictions on abortions procedures.

The bill in the Republican-controlled Senate, which comes two weeks after the legislature failed to put the restrictions to a successful vote in its first special session, would ban most abortions past 20 weeks of pregnancy, place new requirements on which facilities could perform the procedures, and would limit a woman?s ability to induce an abortion by taking a pill.

Abortion rights advocates, including Planned Parenthood of Texas, have said that the new law would effectively shut down all but six of the facilities where abortions are performed in the state.

Pro- and anti-abortion activists flooded the Texas Capitol on Friday afternoon, setting the stage for a dramatic ideological showdown. Abortion rights advocates wearing orange were holding gynecological devices and signs, while anti-abortion advocates dressed in blue carried images of fetuses and Bible verses, according to The Associated Press.

After 20 amendments were offered, debated and rejected, senators prepared for a vote could take place Friday evening or possibly early Saturday morning. Reporters inside the chamber said protesters could be heard chanting outside, and some protesters who were in the gallery were removed after outbursts.

As the time approached midnight, senators debated back and forth with passionate arguments on either side.

Gov. Rick Perry has made passing House Bill 2 a priority and said he will sign it into law. Democrats in the legislature have said that while there may be little they can do to stop the bill?s passage, they plan to challenge it in federal court.

?We do not have the numbers to stop it,? said Democratic Sen. Royce West of Dallas, according to The Associated Press. ?As soon as it?s signed by the governor, it will be challenged ? we believe the whole bill is unconstitutional.?

Texas is only one of several states looking to tighten rules for abortions.

Eric Gay / AP

Lt. Governor David Dewhurst strikes the gavel as the Senate adjourns on July 11 in Austin, Texas.

North Carolina's House passed a bill Thursday that directs state regulators to change standards for abortion clinics to bring them in line with more regulated outpatient surgical centers.

Missouri's governor Friday let a bill become law without his signature that requires doctors to be in the room for the initial dose of a drug used in medication abortions.

Wisconsin?s governor signed into law last week a measure similar to Texas' that forces abortion doctors to have admitting privileges at nearby hospitals. That law was blocked by a federal judge.

The biggest fireworks have come in Texas. Last month, GOP lawmakers were prevented from carrying out a vote on House Bill 2 as their first special session came to an end after Davis delivered an 11-hour filibuster that was cut short when state senators ruled she had committed three rules infractions. Raucous protests from Davis supporters in the gallery prevented lawmakers from carrying out a valid vote on the bill.

Security has been tightened in anticipation of the final vote Friday. Dozens of additional state troopers surrounded the gallery and monitored the hallways Friday, according to the AP.

Troopers inspected bags of people streaming into the halls of the capitol. Senate Sergeant-At-Arms Rick DeLeon said no props would be permitted in the gallery, including tampons, perfume bottles, and moisturizers, the AP reported.

Sen. Kirk Watson of Austin, the leader of the legislature?s Democrats, said he stepped in to prevent troopers from confiscating feminine hygiene products from women hoping to view the debate, according to the AP.

Democrats will not be able to prevent the bill from moving forward again by staging a filibuster. Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst said he will clear the 467-person galley if necessary to get a vote.

?I hope we don?t get to that point but if we do, we do,? Dewhurst said, according to the AP. ?This is a democracy and we will not be interrupted from doing the people?s work by an unruly mob.?

The fight over the bill has drawn national attention from abortion rights advocates disturbed by the spread of new restrictions, as well as anti-abortion activists who say the new law would protect the health of mothers and fetuses.

Former contender for the GOP presidential nomination Rick Santorum appeared in Austin on Thursday, and said that ?Texas is the center of the pro-life debate in the country right now,? according to Reuters.

How Israel's war on Gaza breeds anger, grief and courage

JABALIA REFUGEE CAMP, GAZA // Musab Hijazi longs to see Suhaib, his twin brother.

They were best friends, his family said. Inseparable.

The three-year-old does not grasp what happened on the evening of November 19, when an Israeli missile exploded in the living room of the family home in Gaza's Jabalia refugee camp, killing three members of his family: his father, an older brother, and his twin.

"When he sees pictures of his Suhaib, he speaks to him like he's still alive," said his mother, Aamna Hijazi, in her early 40s. "We try to tell him that Suhaib is gone but he doesn't understand."

While he may be too young to comprehend the loss, Musab is not alone in struggling with the aftermath of those eight days of war last November, fought between Israel and Gaza's Hamas rulers, which killed 158 Palestinians and six Israelis.

Scores of other children, their families and friends in this besieged territory are still wrestling with the emotional and physical trauma of losing loved ones.

The fighting started intensified after Israel assassinated a Hamas official. Gaza militants fired rockets at Israel, which responded with airstrikes on the territory.

During the holy month of Ramadan - the first since the war ended - coming to terms with such tragedy will be as difficult as ever, they said.

"We have a situation where large numbers of these people are still suffering from severe cases of post-traumatic stress disorder," said Saleh Mohsen, a mental-health counsellor at primary and secondary schools in Gaza. "The victims are in desperate need of psychological intervention, but many either don't seek out such support, or it's just not available to them."

Mr Mohsen holds group-therapy sessions for parents who lost children during the November war. In some cases, he said, they suffer from extended periods of denial.

"I counselled one man who simply didn't believe his son had died," he said. "For months after the war, he would go to the cemetery and try to dig up his son's grave because he believed he was still alive. His family would find him at the cemetery and every time, they would have to explain to him again and again that his son was gone."

Thirty-three children in Gaza were killed during the fighting, according to Defence for Children International Palestine Section, a non-governmental organisation based in Geneva, Switzerland. Most of them were killed by Israeli bombs.

On its website, the organisation says 561 children have been killed - including 352 during Israel's three-week war on Gaza that began in December 2008 - during fighting with Israel in the territory since 2005.

Beset by continuing conflict, an Israeli blockade and grinding poverty, Gaza's 1.7 million residents seldom find respite. Mr Mohsen recalled another one of his patients, a mother, who is still tormented by what she endured during the 2008-2009 war, which killed as many as 1,400 Palestinians and 13 Israelis.

After an airstrike caused a fire at her home, she climbed to the upper level of the house with her four-year-old son. In panic, she threw him onto the street below, thinking that would save him from burning to death.

The child suffered a broken arm, but his mother never overcame the guilt of that decision, Mr Mohsen said.

"During our sessions, all she would do is cry and say my words are worthless, that I never had to experience what she experienced," he said.

Back in the Hijazi home, Aamna must now try to raiseb and his five brothers and sisters without her husband, Fouad. He was 46 and worked as a school security guard.

Aamna was lucky to survive the attack, but her injuries were signifcant and left her with serious disabilities. Her right shoulder was broken, her ability to walk has been impaired and after coming out of a ten-day coma, she has suffered from uncontrollable shaking in her right arm, which she said doctors cannot diagnose.

She awoke from her coma in a hospital in Egypt, where medical personnel had taken her for emergency treatment after the airstrike. Her sister-in-law then informed her about the death of Fouad and her two children, Suhaib and her four-year-old, Mohammed.

"When she told me that, for a moment all I wanted to do was die," Aamna said.

But she said she realised she had to remain strong to help raise her two daughters and four sons, including 17-year-old Ashraf. He sometimes pushes his mother in her wheelchair to the market to help with the shopping. He has become a father figure of sorts to his younger sibling.

But like many here, he also seethes with anger. Just as he vowed shortly after the war's end, Ashraf still wants to exact revenge on Israel for the attack on his family.

"I lost my father. I lost my brothers. I have to take care of the family. I am responsible for them," he said, and then added that he wants to join "the resistance."

That is exactly the urge that Ahmed Basioni, 36, wants his 17-year-old son, Nader, to resist. In November, Nader watched as shrapnel from an airstrike cut through the family home in northern Gaza and decapitate Fares, his nine-year-old brother.

Nader also sustained wounds in his leg, which have healed.

But since the attack, he dropped out of school and has been approached by members of militant factions on multiple occasions. "They're trying to recruit Nader because they know his brother is a martyr," Ahmed said.

"But fighting Israel is useless because it's always the normal people like us who die. I don't want my son to die doing something useless."

Ahmed has refused to seek offers of free psychological counselling for Nader and his family. He has instead sealed off Fares' old room, leaving all his belongings, including a birdcage, untouched. Only Ahmed enters the room from time to time, to think, he said.

"It's too painful for the family to go in there," he said.

Sealing one's self off from Gaza's reality is an act of futility, according to Shadi Abu Makthour, 29, an English teacher at a United Nations-run school in the Shijaiya neighbourhood of Gaza City.

He tries to get his class of 12-year-old students to open up about their experiences during the war, even if he acknowledges such discussions may not be as therapeutic as he would like.

"How can we overcome such damage when you know you might be destroyed in the next war?" he said.

This summer, he has worked as an instructor at UN-administered youth camp in the area. On a recent day during the camp, he recalled several of his students, thinking they heard an Israeli helicopter in the distance, fleeing the scene.

"They told me they thought that another war was about to happen," he said. "These children are terrified."

For Aamna and the Hijazi family, they have done their best to rebuild their lives amid the constant threat of war and destruction. Some US$30,000 (Dh110,000) in donations from the community, including financial aid from Hamas, helped them build a new home over the remains of their destroyed one.

But Aamna worries about her family's future. Looking over Musab as he played in their new living room, she said: "I want stability, security for my family. I want them to live like human beings, to have an education.

"That's what any parent wants."

India hammer Australia to win U-19 Series

Asia Pacific Star (IANS) Friday 12th July, 2013

India won the Under-19 International Series after demolishing Australia by eight wickets in the final at Marrara Oval here on Friday.

India never looked troubled in their run chase and reached Australia's total of 75 in only the 16th over to finish the series unbeaten. Sanju Samson (20 not out) and Ankush Bains (40) got the team home with 207 balls to spare.

Indian captain Vijay Zol won Player of the Series after a dominant tournament with the bat, scoring 284 runs. The Man of the Match was medium pacer Deepak Hooda, who in his 10 overs took three wickets for 22 runs.

Abhimanyu Lamba, Chama Milind and Kuldeep Yadav struck twice as Australian batting collapsed like a house of cards.

The Australian players may have spent last night watching one of last year's Australian U-19 representatives, Ashton Agar, bat his way into history in England. But they were unable to use that inspiration to produce any Agar-like heroics with the bat.

Australian fast bowler Matt Fotia was the only player to snare a five-for during the tournament and finished top of the bowling table with 10 scalps at an average of 17.20.

Sixteen-year-old Jake Doran was the best of the Aussie bats throughout the tournament with a spectacular average of 195 and an aggregate of 195 runs (second behind Zol).

NEW YORK (AP) ? Eliot Spitzer has met the deadline to file thousands of petition signatures for his bid to revive his political career by running for New York City comptroller.

Spitzer said that "over 27,000 signatures" were submitted to the city Board of Elections just after 10:30 p.m. Thursday, ahead of a midnight deadline. It came just four days after the tarnished ex-governor launched his campaign.

Spitzer needs 3,750 valid petition signatures to get on the Democratic primary ballot for September.

"I just want to first and foremost thank the citizens of New York that signed these petitions," Spitzer said outside the Board of Elections office in lower Manhattan. "I want to say it's an important statement for those who said it was not possible in the course of three and a half days to gather these signatures to get a candidate on the ballot for citywide office."

The filing may not be the last word. Spitzer's opponents or others could challenge signatures for reasons such as incomplete addresses or missing dates.

If that happens, elections officials will have to review the objections, hold a hearing late this month and decide whether the signatures qualify. The matter could ultimately go to court.

Spitzer, who resigned amid a prostitution scandal in 2008, startled the political establishment and shook up what had been a tame comptroller's race by jumping into it, a decision he says he just made over the weekend.

Candidates were allowed to start petitioning in early June, and many did. Campaigns generally gather two to three times as many signatures as needed, in case some are challenged as having incomplete addresses, missing dates or other flaws.

Spitzer had said he was aiming for 7,500 signatures. His self-financed campaign has offered canvassers $12 an hour to collect them; consulting firm BrownMillerGroup said a report that petitioners were getting $800 a day was inaccurate.

Stringer, meanwhile, noted that he relied on volunteer petitioners.

"One hundred thousand people signed my petition, and we didn't have to pay anybody," he said Thursday evening on TV news station NY 1's "Road to City Hall."

Spitzer and Stringer each need signers who are registered Democrats, live in the city and haven't signed another comptroller hopeful's petition. Signers must supply their names and addresses and date the forms, and signature-gatherers also have to fill out certain information.

Spitzer's four-day timeframe was certainly a challenge, political veterans said.

"It's not a lot of time. It can be done," said Martin Connor, an election lawyer and former state senator.

Meanwhile, Spitzer got encouraging news Wednesday from a poll showing he topped Stringer 42 percent to 33 percent among registered Democrats, including those leaning toward but not settled on a candidate. The Wall Street Journal-NBC 4 New York-Marist questioned 546 registered Democrats and had a margin of error of plus or minus 4.2 percentage points for questions limited to them.

Spitzer said Wednesday night that while the poll numbers were comforting, he was aware he had more work to do.

"I'm never confident," he said. "And that is defensive politics."

Stringer campaign manager Sascha Owen expressed confidence that as more voters get to know Stringer, "he will be the obvious choice for comptroller."

Other comptroller contenders include Republican John Burnett, who has worked on Wall Street; his campaign said Thursday he'd filed about 8,000 signatures.

Petitions weren't yet due for some third-party contenders, but Libertarian Kristin Davis' campaign has collected 3,100 so far, spokesman Andrew Miller said. Adding an unusual element to the campaign, Davis is a former madam.

Green Party candidate and former teacher Julia Willebrand's campaign didn't immediately respond to a message sent through the campaign's Facebook page Thursday evening.

NBC.com lists Spitzer as a guest on "The Tonight Show with Jay Leno" Friday night. The show airs at 11:35 EST.

Research reveals Earth's core affects length of day

Research at the University of Liverpool has found that variations in the length of day over periods of between one and 10 years are caused by processes in the Earth's core.

The Earth rotates once per day, but the length of this day varies. A yeas, 300million years ago, lasted about 450 days and a day would last about 21 hours. As a result of the slowing down of the Earth's rotation the length of day has increased.

The rotation of the earth on its axis, however, is affected by a number of other factors - for example, the force of the wind against mountain ranges changes the length of the day by plus or minus a millisecond over a period of a year.

Professor Richard Holme, from the School of Environmental Sciences, studied the variations and fluctuations in the length of day over a one to 10 year period between 1962 and 2012. The study took account of the effects on the Earth's rotation of atmospheric and oceanic processes to produce a model of the variations in the length of day on time scales longer than a year.

Professor Holme said: "The model shows well-known variations on decadal time scales, but importantly resolves changes over periods between one and 10 years. Previously these changes were poorly characterised; the study shows they can be explained by just two key signals, a steady 5.9 year oscillation and episodic jumps which occur at the same time as abrupt changes in the Earth's magnetic field, generated in the Earth's core.

He added: "This study changes fundamentally our understanding of short-period dynamics of the Earth's fluid core. It leads us to conclude that the Earth's lower mantle, which sits above the Earth's outer core, is a poor conductor of electricity giving us new insight into the chemistry and mineralogy of the Earth's deep interior."

The research was conducted in partnership with the Universit Paris Diderot and is published in Nature.

Mars 2020: NASA's going bold ? on a budget

Mars 2020: NASA's next rover will search for signs of ancient life on Mars and stockpile the evidence for an eventual return to Earth. To save money, NASA will borrow hardware and designs from the successful Mars Curiosity rover.?

By Liz Fuller-Wright,?Correspondent / July 10, 2013

Mars 2020 will reuse the design and engineering work done for the NASA rover Curiosity, which landed on Mars in 2012, but with new science instruments to accomplish different science objectives.

JPL-Caltech/NASA

For many, the pinnacle of Mars research would be sending human scientists to explore the surface, gather specimens, and study them with high-tech instruments, either there or back here on Earth.

That's what we did with the Apollo missions, and it transformed our understanding of the moon's surface. NASA's vision for Mars, announced Tuesday at a press conference at NASA's headquarters in D.C., isn't quite that grand, but it's surprisingly close ? and they're doing it on a budget.

"One of the very biggest questions for all of?humankind is, Are we alone?" asks Lindy Elkins-Tanton, a planetary scientist on the Mars 2020 science team. "And that is the question we are hoping to make really big advances?with in this Mars 2020 mission."

Here's the good news for Red Planet enthusiasts: In 2020, NASA will send a near-clone of Curiosity, the wildly successful robot currently exploring Mars, to some really juicy terrain where life may once have flourished.

The even better news, if you're rooting to send people there: The mission will test out equipment that humans will need on Mars, a concrete step toward President Obama's stated goal of having humans on Mars by the mid-2030s.

While exploring, the Mars 2020 rover will stockpile the most interesting specimens it finds and keep them on ice for a future sample-return mission.

"Those samples are going to have an enormous impact on our understanding of planetary science," says Jack Mustard, the leader of the rover's science definition team.

NASA won't say exactly when or how those samples will be transported to Earth, prompting speculation that the rocks will wait for those human geologists. It's possible that they'll be flown back by a future unmanned mission, although the US has never accomplished a robotic sample-return mission. Soviet scientists did it three times in the 1970s, bringing moon rocks and dust back to Moscow in 1970, 1972, and 1976.

Don't worry that the specimens will die while waiting for their ticket to Earth: the rover isn't looking for anything currently alive. After all, odds are good that anything living on Mars right now would be deep underground, and we don't even begin to know where to look. (Wandering the planet and shouting, "Here, little bacteria! Here, little bacteria!" seems like a waste.)

Instead, the rover will look for ancient life. As NASA's John Grunsfeld said during Tuesday's press conference, "We know it had a habitable environment," but we still haven't found proof to answer the question, "Did Mars ever have life?" The rover will explore areas that used to be warm and wet and hospitable, even if they're cold and dry and barren today, and look for evidence of once-living creatures.

But here's the bad news: The budget for Mars 2020 is about $1 billion less than the budget for Curiosity, coming in at $1.5 billion. That has prompted some cost-saving measures, like recycling Curiosity's design even using some of its some spare parts. The scientific instruments will be different, but the chassis and the entire landing system ? including the nifty sky crane ? can be rebuilt with little new engineering or research.

Like a new model year of the same car, NASA has upgraded the dashboard and added heated seats, but the engine, drive shaft, and wheels are essentially the same. Also, as Curiosity has been such a roaring success, NASA's version of car insurance (funding to be held in reserve in case of emergency) is cheaper, too.

The team will tweak the landing system's design to improve the landing site precision and accuracy, says Dr. Mustard, who teaches at Brown University. He points out that NASA engineers placed Curiosity "exactly where they wanted to," but the rover still required months of trundling along at its slower-than-walking pace to get to its target, Mount Sharp. "With the new technologies we're talking about," he says, "they could land right at the base of Mount Sharp ? within spitting distance, instead of an 8-month drive away."?

"NASA is not just about science questions," says Dr. Elkins-Tanton. It's about "inspiring a whole new global generation to think big, to aspire, and to reach out."

40-Something Life: Wine Wednesday... The Benefits of Drinking ...

Wine improves with age.? The older I get the better I like it!"

- Anonymous

The Benefits of Drinking Wine...

I have been doing a lot of wine drinking tasting lately so I have been convincing myself of the benefits. ?Do you even want to know what they are???Of course you do!??Who doesn?t want to hear about the benefits of doing something that can sometimes be seen as bad for you?to hear that there are benefits of it being good for you. We all see the reports of?different surveys done every year on the health benefits of drinking wine, but can it really make a difference???Well, I googled this subject to the breaking point of my little computer and here is what I came up with?

Helps memory and cognitive function??

Studies have shown that people who drink moderate amounts of wine a day (that's one to two four ounce glasses) may have a reduced risk of suffering from dementia and Alzheimer's. It is thought that this is due to the fact that alcohol promotes the production of HDL, the "good cholesterol," which helps reduce the inflammation and clogging of artery walls. For this same reason, it is also believed that drinking moderate amounts of wine can help reduce the risk of suffering from a stroke.

Promotes Longevity

Wine drinkers have a 34 percent lower mortality rate than beer or spirits drinkers. Source: a Finnish study of 2,468 men over a 29-year period, published in the Journals of Gerontology, 2007.

Helps with weight management ? this is my favorite one!

According to one study, women who drank one to two glasses of wine a day were found to be 30 percent less likely to be overweight than women who didn't drink. The explanation? Basically it has to the do with the amount of energy being spent creating the enzymes required to digest the drink - some research has found that your body can burn calories up to 90 minutes after consuming a glass. Another theory has to do with the fact that alcohol raises your body temperature which makes you burn calories.

Cuts Risk of Cataracts

Moderate drinkers are 32 percent less likely to get cataracts than nondrinkers; those who consume wine are 43 percent less likely to develop cataracts than those drinking mainly beer. Source: a study of 1,379 individuals in?Iceland, published in Nature, 2003.

Reduces the risk of heart disease, strokes and diabetes

Studies have shown that when consumed in moderate amounts benefits of drinking wine lower occurrences of heart disease and other heart related illnesses occur, over people who do not drink wine. Stroke and diabetes are other conditions that benefit from consuming wine by the discharging of glucose from the system. Stroke, another killer, because of the effects of blood thinning by drinking wine, stroke becomes much less of a threat.

Can help with Osteoporosis

Samsung Galaxy S 4 arrives on C Spire's LTE network for $199

Looks like Samsung's on a mission to make the Galaxy S 4 available on as many carriers as possible, and C Spire is one of its latest destinations. Samsung's prolific flagship device joins the iPhone 5 and the HTC One on the company's list of smartphone offerings for its LTE network. The phone is available (in both black and white) through the carrier's website and retail locations for $199 with a two-year contract. If C Spire doesn't offer its services in your area, you still have other regional carrier options, including US Cellular, Cricket, and Ting.
