Research explores factors that impact adolescent mental health

Feb. 27, 2013 ? Research indicates that half of all lifetime cases of mental illness begin by age 14, well before adulthood. Three new studies investigate the cognitive, genetic and environmental factors that may contribute to mental health disorders in adolescence.

The studies are published in Psychological Science and Clinical Psychological Science, journals of the Association for Psychological Science.

Social-Information-Processing Patterns Mediate the Impact of Preventive Intervention on Adolescent Antisocial Behavior

Kenneth A. Dodge, Jennifer Godwin, and The Conduct Problems Prevention Research Group

Fast Track is a preventive intervention designed to help children who show aggression at an early age. The intervention addresses kids' social-cognitive processes in several ways, including social-skill training groups, parent groups, and classroom curricula. In this study, the researchers investigated the processes underlying this intervention's success. A total of 891 kindergarteners who were at high risk for adolescent antisocial behavior were randomly assigned to receive either the Fast Track intervention or a control program. The data revealed that children in the intervention showed decreased levels of antisocial behavior at the end of 9th grade, which was driven, in part, by improvement on three specific social-cognitive processes. These results suggest that social-cognitive processes may play an important role in the development of antisocial behavior in youth.

A Comparison of Two Models of Urgency: Urgency Predicts Both Rash Action and Depression in Youth

Gregory T. Smith, Leila Guller, and Tamika C.B. Zapolski

Smith and colleagues test two competing theories concerning the trait of urgency. One theory posits that urgency reflects the people's tendency to act rashly or impulsively when they're emotional. Another theory suggests that urgency reflects a general responsiveness to emotions that can lead to rash action (such as heavy drinking or binge eating) or ill-advised inaction (which is associated with symptoms of depression). In previous research, Smith and colleagues found that urgency levels in 5th grade predicted addictive behaviors (including alcohol consumption, binge eating, and smoking) in 6th grade, which is consistent with both theories. In this study, the researchers found that level of urgency in 5th grade also predicted higher levels of depression at the end of 6th grade. These results support the view that urgency can lead either to rash action or ill-advised inaction. The researchers conclude that urgency may be an important trait in various diagnoses, across both internalizing and externalizing disorders.

Genetic and Environmental Influences on Rumination, Distraction, and Depressed Mood in Adolescence

Mollie N. Moore, Rachel H. Salk, Carol A. Van Hulle, Lyn Y. Abramson, Janet S. Hyde, Kathryn Lemery-Chalfant, and H. Hill Goldsmith

About one in 10 adolescents will experience major depression or dysthymia by age 18. Rumination, the process of dwelling on one's feelings and problems, is an established cognitive risk factor for depression. In this study, Moore and colleagues investigated whether response styles associated with rumination might account for some of the genetic vulnerability associated with depression. A total of 756 adolescent twins ages 12 to 14 completed the Response Styles Questionnaire and several measures of depressive symptoms. Brooding was positively correlated with depressive symptoms, while distraction was negatively correlated with the symptoms. About 54% of the variation in depression symptoms could be attributed to genetic variation, while 37% of the variation in reflection and 30% of the variation in distraction were accounted for by genetic variation. Further analyses showed that individual differences in distraction share both genetic and environmental sources of variation with depression. Together, these results suggest that the same genetic factors that contribute to distraction may protect against depression.

All kids under 17 get curfew in Miami

Miami Police are enforcing a curfew for children under the age of 17, citing safety.

Curfew hours are 11 p.m. to 6 a.m. Sunday to Thursday and midnight to 6 a.m. on Friday and Saturday.

Children under 17 are not allowed to "linger, stay, congregate, move about, wander, or stroll in any public place in Miami-Dade County, either on foot or in a vehicle during curfew hours," according to police.

NBC Miami

"I don't really need a curfew, but I do feel that a curfew is important because young kids like my age are dying in the streets," Keith Stewart said.

Players for Team Pete Basketball said they don't like the move.

"I don't really need a curfew," Keith Stewart said, "but I do feel that a curfew is important because young kids like my age are dying in the streets."?

Other Miami youths said they support the curfew.

"Make them go home, do a little homework, get them home early," Robert Sanchez said.

Said adult Cesar Barrero: "Kids at that age ? there's nothing for kids to do from 12 o'clock to 6 o'clock in the morning."

More from NBCMiami.com

Police say exemptions include if a child is with a parent or legal guardian or someone over 21 years old who has permission to be responsible for the child; and if the juvenile is working or traveling to or from work, traveling interstate, or has written permission to run an errand from a parent or guardian.

Other exemptions are if a child is helping in an emergency, traveling to or from a school or a religious, civic or county-sponsored event, is emancipated by marriage or court order, is homeless, is exercising First Amendment rights, or is on the property of his residence or a neighbor's residence who does not object, if the child is attending or coming back from a public event that began before 10 p.m. and has written permission, and if the child's activity is authorized by the county commission.

Police have not yet given reasons for the curfew, besides safety. But many people point to rashes of violent and sometimes deadly street crimes often involving young people.

"You know what's going on," Pete Soriano of Team Pete Sports said. "You got drug dealing, you got shootouts, kids getting killed left and right."

At Overtown's Gibson Park, manager Benjamin Hanks supports the curfew -- recalling all too well the night three people were shot at a youth football game last September. He believes a police presence, and the curfew, will help make the city's parks and streets safer.

"I think it's overdue that we need cops' supervision, more for preventive measures for the safety of people," Hanks said.

New GSA Special Paper

Boulder, CO, USA - The broadly accepted hypothesis for the development of the segmented Cordilleran orogen above a long-lived eastwardly dipping subduction zone is at odds with many critical observations. In this new Special Paper from The Geological Society of America, Robert S. Hildebrand of the University of California-Davis explores an alternative collisional model. This well-illustrated book, which includes a pull-out map, builds upon Hildebrand's earlier work, published as GSA Special Paper 457 (2009).

Starting with an overview of Cordilleran exotic and suspect terranes, Hildebrand builds upon his model for the Mesozoic collision of the exotic Rubian ribbon continent with the western margin of North America. He integrates the disparate fragments into a dynamic model involving arc magmatism, arc-continent collision, slab failure magmatism, and meridional migration. While the main focus is on the offshore assembly of the Rubian ribbon continent, Hildebrand explores its interactions with North America during the Sevier and Laramide events and concludes that North America was the lower plate in both.

Hildebrand notes that this new volume "will be of great interest to the general geological community, including advanced students, as it presents new ideas on the Mesozoic assembly of California and provides the first overview of the North American Cordillera since GSA's Decade of North American Geology volumes some 20 years ago."

Function Rooms North Sydney More Than Just Four Square Walls

Sydney as a whole has become a popular city for the corporate world and individuals to hold their corporate events, exhibitions, weddings, and birthday parties. Function rooms North Sydney are particularly sought after for the variety of floor plans, arrangements and services they offer.

There are numerous function rooms North Sydney venues to choose from like galleries, hotels, conference centres, exhibition centres, reception centres etc. They differ in size as well as service offered and depending on your budget, need of space and other services you can choose one thats right for you. The first criteria to be considered while choosing the venue is the reason or type of function, based on this you will be able to determine which kind of function room will be ideal. Like for example a corporate meeting of about 10 people would look quite inapprop0riate if held in an art gallery which has a capacity of about 100 people. The participants would feel lost in the empty space not to mention the difficulty one would have in arranging all the technical equipments needed to host a corporate meeting successfully.

The second criteria would be the amenities and services needed. Each event type needs a different set of amenities and services. A wedding reception would need a dance floor, bridal room, formal table settings, floral and other decorative arrangements and elaborate catering facilities including wedding cake etc, a corporate meeting would require audio and visual equipment, flip charts and writing boards, computers and internet facilities and a formal theatre-style or round-table seating arrangement, an art exhibition may need the right kind of spot-lighting on the paintings to highlight its beauty amongst various other arrangements including temperature and humidity control. The different venues are geared to serve different clientele and all you need to do is discuss your event type and they can guide you through to the right setting.

Once you have decided on the type of function rooms North Sydney to hire you must go through their floor plan. Most of these event managers are professionals and know their job pretty well however your needs and expectations will definitely be different from others and to make sure you are fully satisfied with the arrangements. Depending on the floor plan there are different types of seating arrangements to choose from theatre, classroom and U-shape. Similarly there are different floor plans for the festive event too like boardroom, cabaret, banquet and cocktail. It would be a good idea to hold business and boardroom meetings in rooms that have maximum natural light flowing in like glass windows from floor to ceiling, this should help keep the participants awake and fresh all day long. Also dont forget to ask for the coffee / tea vending machines as most office-goers are coffee addicts and it helps them to concentrate on the meeting better.

TEALS: A Novel Way To Bring Digital Literacy To The Classroom ...

TEALS Ben

Microsoft Software Engineer and TEALS teacher Ben grades students? programming projects.

There?s a wealth of tech-savvy professionals out in the world right now. The future is being developed by people who are passionate about technology, computer science, and digital literacy. A grassroots program is working to bring those passionate people into high school classrooms in order to improve digital literacy and tech skills.

Technology Education And Literacy in Schools (TEALS) is a program that recruits, mentors, and places technology professionals into high school classes as part-time teachers. The goal of TEALS is pretty simple: to bring digital literacy to schools. As the folks at TEALS say, they?re working to offer programming and lessons that would normally be too costly to pursue or enact.

By bringing in professionals from outside and having a team teaching model, TEALS is building a novel model that would work in even more than just computer science classes. For example, I could see the TEALS model being rolled out across all the social sciences by bringing in experts in various fields to do some tandem teaching in order to bring even more real-world experience into the classroom.

How TEALS Works

teals brett veneta

Software Engineer Brett and Software Test Engineer Veneta sharing stories after class.

It?s pretty simple. A TEALS teacher could be someone like a software engineer or web designer who wakes up a little earlier than usual, stops by his or her local school to impart some knowledge, and then continues on to work. TEALS has a pair of programs at present: Intro to Computer Science (based on the Berkeley curriculum) and an AP Computer Science course (based on the University of Washington curriculum). Training for TEALS teachers is done over the summer and teachers can opt to choose one or both courses.

TEALS always team teaches which allows the school teacher to completely take over the lesson(s) once finished. In other words, it?s a great way for both students and teachers to learn high-tech skills at the same time. Once this transfer of knowledge happens, a computer science and digital literacy curriculum has a solid chance of blossoming. Very cool.

Founded by Microsoft employee Kevin Wang and now boasting more than 120 volunteer computer science teachers in 37 schools (as of last summer), TEALS is growing and there?s no surprise why: they?re bringing important skills into the classroom. As of a July 2012 GeekWire article, TEALS is in Washington, Kentucky, California, Virginia, Utah, Washington, D.C., Minnesota, North Dakota, and there are now plans to bring the program to New York City.

The TEALS Goals

According to Wang, there are a couple important long-term goals of TEALS:

  • Making sure every high school student in America has the opportunity to take intro and AP CS class in school.
  • Match the percentage of AP students of the other 3 big sciences: Physics, Chemistry and Biology.

Sofia Vergara Dishes Motherhood Secrets - Celebuzz

Key comedic elements for the fifth season of Emmy Award-winning sitcom, Modern Family: great writing, killer cast, dead babies.

?That plastic thing sticks into your skin and it?s horrible!? Sofia Vergara told reporters while promoting Escape From Planet Earth about the fake baby bump she wore under her clothes while stomping around in a hormonal rage for most of season four, adding, ?We also have a set of dead babies.?

That?s right, ?dead babies.? But before you call Child Services, she?s referring of course to fake babies standing in for her new baby boy on the show. When the wide shots are done, they bring in the real baby and shoot closeups.

?You are always supposed to only use it for like 20 minutes at a time,? said Vergara about the rules governing the use of babies on-set. ?So, we have this dead baby that is pretty much the one that I act with.?

Discovered by a photographer on a beach in her native Colombia, who would guess the runway model turned actress, known for her red-hot curves, would be targeted by Modern Family showrunners for insemination?

?I never thought that Gloria and Jay would have a baby!? exclaimed Vergara. ?When I heard the rumors that there was going to be a new baby, I never dreamed it was going to be us.?

For Gloria, it won?t be such a big change as she?s already mother to Manny (Rico Rodriguez), her first born on the show and still the light of her life.

?Now she?s a little bit older, more worried about Manny?s feelings,? said Vergara about her character on Season 5.

Mother of 21-year-old?Manolo Gonzalez Vergara from her first marriage, the comedienne knows a little something about being a mom.

?Don?t get in a car with anyone that is driving drunk.?Don?t be stupid, like when he is in New York on his own, don?t walk inside a back alley.?Use your head.?Don?t go alone on the train at 3 in the morning,? said Vergara, reciting a list of concerns. ?As a mom, you never stop worrying.?

Manolo goes to college in New York but stays in LA with his mother and her fiance, businessman Nick Loeb, between semesters. But, having him home doesn?t keep Vergara from worrying.

?Like when it?s one o?clock, it?s like, why are you not back? You didn?t drink, right?? she sighed.??But when he is gone, who knows what he is doing? He must be, like, running crazy, naked or who knows what? But I can sleep.?

Modern Family?airs Wednesdays at 9PM on ABC.

ING cuts thousands more jobs at retail bank

AMSTERDAM (Reuters) - Dutch financial services group ING announced deeper job cuts in retail banking as it prepares to separate its banking and insurance operations under the terms of a state bailout.

ING is dismantling its once-fashionable bancassurer model after the 2008 bailout, divesting insurance and investment management and other assets through disposals or stock market listings as it prepares to repay the aid.

The group, which had already announced about 2,400 job cuts in November, said the new lay-offs at IT and call centers were needed to lower costs in its Dutch and Belgian retail banks.

Explaining the cost cuts, it said more of its customers were shifting their banking online.

Internet banking is well-established in the Netherlands and ING had been a market leader with its standalone online banks, ING Direct, in several markets.

"Customers are rapidly moving towards more digital environments, more online usage and less of the traditional approach, and we have to respond to that," Chief Financial Officer Patrick Flynn told Reuters. "Our more traditional retail entities in the Netherlands and Belgium are moving in the same direction now."

ING said it would cut 2,400 jobs in the Netherlands and Belgium, bringing lay-offs announced over the past 15 months to 7,500 - or roughly 9 percent of its workforce at the end of December.

It said this would save about 1 billion euros ($1.35 billion) in annual costs by 2015.

ING Chief Executive Jan Hommen, who declined to say whether he would retire from the bank this year, did not rule out further cuts. The Dutch firm's shares fell 1.5 percent after it released 2012 results and announced the cuts.

On Wednesday, ING reported fourth-quarter net profit of 1.434 billion euros ($1.93 billion), up 21 percent from a year ago thanks to gains from divestments but below a consensus analyst forecast of 1.587 billion euros.

Underlying pre-tax profit for ING's banking operations was 184 million euros, down 72 percent from a year ago, while the insurance unit swung from a loss of 1.51 billion euros to an underlying pre-tax profit of 272 million euros.

Analysts had expected the banking and insurance arms to report underlying profit of 290 million and 265 million respectively.

Many European banks are laying off workers and simplifying their activities after the financial crisis led to more conservative lending policies and forced them to bolster their capital to cover investment risks.

British bank Barclays said this week it would cut at least 3,700 jobs. Several other European lenders, including Deutsche Bank and Swiss UBS , have also shed staff in recent months as they reassess their businesses.

Hybrid-Powered Kia Cross GT Concept CUV Unveiled At Chicago ...

Yesterday Kia Motors America unveiled the Cross GT concept at the 2013 Chicago Auto Show.

According to Kia, the Cross GT seamlessly melds high technology with nature, creating a harmonious partnership between driver and vehicle that also respects our global environment.

While purely a concept, the Cross GT does reveal Kia?s intentions to potentially offer a larger premium CUV than the current Sorento.

?The debut of the GT in 2011 heralded a new frontier for Kia, both from a design and a business perspective,? noted Peter Schreyer, Kia Motors Corporation president and global chief of design.? ?It beautifully illustrated to the world that the brand was ready to explore the possibility of perhaps one day offering a full-size rear-drive luxury saloon.? The Cross GT, with its raised stance and large cargo area, allows us to envision the GT in the form of a full-size luxury crossover.?

The Cross GT is based on Kia?s rear-drive GT-chassis and has short overhangs, a long wheelbase and an aggressively wide posture. But the Cross GT offers even greater visibility thanks to its taller stature and features all-wheel drive for improved performance and all-weather capability.

The Cross GT is powered by what Kia calls an efficient hybrid powertrain that looks to reduce the vehicle?s carbon footprint. Starting with the company?s 3.8-liter V6 hybrid, 8-speed automatic and torque-vectoring all-wheel-drive, the concept adds an evolution of Kia?s parallel hybrid system, a pancake-shaped electric motor sandwiched between the V6 and the transmission.

The electric motor is packaged under the rear floor.? Combined, the V6 and electric motor produce 500 pound-foot of torque and 400 horsepower, with an all-electric range of 20-miles ? sufficient according to Kia to enable exhilarating performance, while delivering superior fuel economy and fuel efficiency.

While strictly a concept powertrain, Kia?s hybrid technology, combined with all-wheel drive are ideas that Kia said may one day find their way into a production vehicle.

Kia_Cross_GT_Rear-668LR

At 122.0 inches, the Cross GT?s wheelbase is longer than Sorento?s by 15.7 inches, and its overall length of 192.8 inches is 8.4 inches greater than the Sorento. Still compared to the Sorento, the 79.1-inch width is 4.9 inches wider, but the Cross GT?s overall height of 65.3 inches is actually 1.6 inches shorter, giving the concept a lower roofline than most large CUVs.

The Cross GT has dual rear-hinged doors, more commonly referred to as ?suicide? doors.? The unique configuration allows for easy access to the rear bucket seats.

The cargo compartment is accessed through a ?clam shell? design that incorporates a traditional glass hatch and a tailgate.

Real Estate Marketing Strategies: Right Mindset + Right Action ...

by Dr. Maya Bailey

Have you ever felt that one part of you is "gung-ho" about success and creates all these action steps for you to do each day, while another part of you is resisting, procrastinating and sometimes even rebelling at what you set out to do?

That part is called your "inner rebel" or "inner resistance". In fact, that part is your subconscious mind. It's the part of you that is below the surface and you don't see it. You're like the Titanic, floating along, thinking that all is well when suddenly you hit a iceberg (your subconscious mind) and you start to feel stuck.

Have you ever felt that before? Have you ever noticed that you get close to success and then hold back? Or you achieve success but then sabotage it?

The conflict is between your conscious mind which is saying, "I want to be successful" and your subconscious mind which is saying, "I'm afraid to be successful" or "if I try, I'll fail".

Why would you want to block success from coming to you? Why would your subconscious mind be doing that? The answer is, it all depends on you. Everyone has their own individual blocks about success.

Perhaps your particular block is that you have a fear of success. Your subconscious mind is programmed to think that if you are successful, you will be overwhelmed and you will lose the balance in your life. As long as that belief is in existence and you're unaware of it, then it will block you from forward progress.

The classic fear of success is this: "To be successful I will have to work long hard hours, struggle and sacrifice." Who would want that?

Another place where you have self-limiting beliefs and probably don't know it is in prospecting. You tell yourself things like this, "I just don't have time to prospect," or "people don't want to hear what I have to say."

Instead, what's really going on is that you have never looked at and worked through your hidden Self-limiting beliefs such as:

  • If I pick up the phone and call people, I'll be rejected.
  • If I call up people, they will disapprove of me.
  • Prospecting is begging.

These beliefs are in your blind spot and no one has taught you how to reprogram your subconscious mind.

If you're carrying any self-limiting beliefs at all, then your mindset is anti-success instead of pro-success, and success will always elude you.

Your Beliefs Create Your Reality.

So if you have beliefs like "there is never enough money", then you will subconsciously create circumstances in which you never have enough money.

Now what you probably ask yourself is, "How can I get the RIGHT MINDSET?"

It really comes down to one thing. You need to reprogram your self-limiting beliefs. Once you have eliminated your self-limiting beliefs, then you can install your updated EMPOWERED beliefs.

Let me give you some examples:

In the category of "Self" your old beliefs would be replaced with updated beliefs like:

  • I am more than good enough.
  • I have all it takes to succeed.
  • I am worthy of success.
  • I am perfectly imperfect like everyone else.

Can you see how these beliefs help you?

In the category of "Beliefs about success" you would update your beliefs with:

  • I create success with ease
  • I create success by working smarter not harder
  • I create success balance in my life

In the category of beliefs about prospecting, your new beliefs would be:

  • I have a valuable service to offer and people are happy to hear from me.
  • I approach every prospecting call with the mindset that I am the giver.

In the category of "Beliefs about money" your updated beliefs could be:

  • There's always an abundance of money in the universe.
  • I deserve to receive an abundance of money.
  • I am a magnet for money.

Notice how you feel now that you've begun to install new EMPOWERED BELIEFS into your mind. To make them stick, you need to practice them every day.

So far, I have been talking about how to acquire a RIGHT MINDSET.

You also need to have the right action. In order for it to be the RIGHT ACTION, it must be an action that is designed to create a win-win situation. I want to re-emphasize that the first things you should be thinking about when you take action is your mindset and your emotions.

Rather than being fearful, be excited. Get excited and enthusiastic about how you're going to help your clients with their real estate needs. If you have a lot of listings right now but they're not selling, then get creative, think outside the box, create meetings with your clients, and express to them how much you want help them.

Ask questions and get curious about their motivation. Find out more about them, you'll be able to think more clearly about the action that is needed in order for their home to sell. If you've established a good rapport, they will be more likely to take your advice, once they know you are on their side.

Once again it comes back to the fact the you need to come from "contribution". People can feel that and then they want to cooperate with you. That's how a win-win is created. Come from your heart, say you can help them, and they will cooperate. The result is that you receive a generous check with your name on it.

Here is an empowered belief that I suggest you do frequently: "I do work I love and I am richly rewarded."

Assuming you have healthy boundaries with your clients and you're not trying to become their best friend, what you need to do is become their best real estate consultant.

So how do you sell yourself on yourself? You take a good hard look at your gifts and your talents and what you offer people in every transaction. Focus on your strengths.

It is definitely necessary that you "toot your own horn" if you want to generate business. This doesn't mean you have to be loud or obnoxious, you can do this in a very subtle way. It's an attitude you carry about yourself as a real estate agent. Are you proud of the work you do? Then when you're given an opportunity describe what you do, that's when you can "toot your own horn".

I know for some of you, this will rub up against your old Self Limiting Beliefs, such as:

  • If I speak well about myself that I'm bragging.
  • If I think that I'm better than others then I'm conceited.
  • If I toot my own horn, I'll be judged.

Let me be very clear that everything I just said and all three of these beliefs are coming from your subconscious mind and none of them are true. They are just beliefs and beliefs can be changed.

The truth is that it is safe to be visible and to give up the old strategy of hiding. Hiding is not "RIGHT ACTION". Hiding never helped anybody succeed.

To summarize; you could be highly trained and prospecting but unless you have gotten rid of all of your self-limiting beliefs, you probably aren't prospecting the way you should.

The next thing to note is that prospecting is a set of skills, and unless you know that set of skills, you will not be successful in prospecting. In other words, you could be clear of self-limiting beliefs and still not be able to prospect.

In other words, you need a script from which you can improvise. It's easy to acquire the skills and once you reprogram your self-limiting beliefs, it's easy to implement these skills. Basically you need follow the formula that Right Mindset + Right Action = SUCCESS, which is your formula for success in prospecting and in business in general.

The third thing you need to know about taking RIGHT ACTION is that you need to come from a place of "contribution" because if you don't, you will see people as dollar signs and they will feel it and that will repel business.

RIGHT MINDSET + RIGHT ACTION= SUCCESS.

Va. Lawmakers Want Own Currency

Will Virginia start minting its own currency?

It's an idea worth considering, according to the state's House of Delegates.

The lower chamber passed a bill Monday to study the possibility. The legislation, proposed by Manassas Republican Del. Robert Marshall, would create a new joint subcommittee made up of lawmakers, plus two outside experts, to "study the feasibility of a metallic-based monetary unit."

The committee could spend up to $17,440 and would present its recommendations before the legislative session starts in 2014.

Translation: Ten people would advise Virginia on whether to start making its own currency on a gold or silver standard.

It's not the first time Marshall has proposed such legislation. Versions of this bill have been floating around since 2011. Its preamble is rife with damnations of the Federal Reserve and its "unprecedented monetary policy actions" and "activist intervention in banking and credit markets," the point being that Virginia can no longer trust federal fiat money, and might need "a more stable money unit consistent with limited government."

The heavily Republican House of Delegates passed it 65 to 32 Monday.

While the prospect of a state-based Virginia currency sounds intriguing, and potentially destabilizing, it's not likely to happen. The bill now moves to the state Senate, which is less likely to approve. Virginia's upper chamber is evenly split between 20 Republicans and 20 Democrats.

The response from Republican leadership has been lukewarm.

"Although I cannot express confidence in the legislation's prospects as of this writing, I might note we are prepared in the event of a Virginia currency being approved," said Jeff Ryer, spokesman for the Virginia Senate GOP caucus.

The Marshall proposal, well known to some in the Virginia legislature, was gently mocked at the annual Virginia Capitol Correspondents Association dinner in 2011, where wooden coins bearing Marshall's face surfaced.

No one has publicly taken credit for the coins, according to a Virginia source.

Mobile and Social: A Marketing Marriage Made in Heaven

Apparently the stars have come into alignment. Or perhaps Hell has frozen over. Whatever the cause, for the first time ever, more Facebook users are accessing the site on mobile devices than on desktops. Not only that, Facebook is actually generating revenue from mobile ads. Perhaps mobile is not just a fad after all. Hmmmm. Time to rethink that marketing strategy, maybe even upgrade the corporate website. Smart thinking and here?s why: Location-based, real time information is no longer a novelty. It has become the norm. Where do people need that information? On their mobile devices. When do they want that information? Now. Who do they want to share it with? Their social network: friends, family, coworkers, even strangers.

What is Mobile Marketing?

Mobile marketing is getting a lot of press lately. Even though the very term ?mobile marketing? has become a bit ubiquitous, there is still some confusion as to what mobile marketing actually is. That is because there are actually two different definitions of the term. According to Wikipedia, ?Mobile marketing is marketing on or with a mobile device, such as a cell phone?. It is also defined as ?The use of the mobile medium as a means of marketing communication?. So, in addition to being marketing messages viewed on the small or ?third? screen, the first two being the television and the computer monitor, it is also marketing that it specifically geared toward mobile devices. The first case would be a website as it is rendered on a cell phone or tablet, the second would be SMS messages and push ads. Clearly, it is the medium AND the message.

Mobile and Social

While social media was the buzz word for 2012, this year it is mobile marketing?and rightly so. However, it is important to recognize that there really is no social without mobile, nor mobile without social. In fact, many social networks are mobile-only platforms. For instance, Instagram, Facebook?s recently acquired photo-sharing application and Twitter?s new love-child, Vine, for micro-video sharing. Both were designed as mobile-only apps. Those two examples highlight the synergistic relationship between social and mobile. Another great example is the Super Bowl. Many of the brands incorporating mobile into their marketing message used social media as the catalyst. Kraft demonstrated the marriage of social and mobile deliciously with their Oreo brand. Their Super Bowl ad ended with a call to action: vote for your favorite, the cookie or the creme, on Instagram. In another commercial, automotive brand Lincoln and comic Jimmy Fallon used a Twitter hashtag to create a 90 second spot optimized for mobile viewing. We are seeing that social media play a crucial role in the success of mobile advertising. Many advertisers are successfully using social media to prompt consumers to use their mobile devices as the starting point to learn more about a brand or product.

The take-away: Social has gone mobile. Mobile needs social for ultimate success. Be kind to your marketing effort. While you are busy building up your social presence, don?t forget to make sure your efforts are mobile-friendly. Right now, mobile and social are in the honeymoon phase. Both are happy, basking in the sun, but remember what your parents told you. Marriage is hard work. Part of that work is making sure your website is mobile responsive, getting rid of any flash-based content and adding prominent social sharing buttons that people can actually click.

Online consumers increasingly becoming 'invisible,' says Ovum ...

You are here: Home / Streaming Video / Online consumers increasingly becoming ?invisible,? says Ovum

Online consumers are becoming more wary of what information they provide to online miners and are looking for new tools to make them ?invisible? to those who want to learn more about their habits. This means trouble for those who have used the Internet as a bottomless pit of consumer information, Ovum's latest Consumer Insights Survey suggests.

It's becoming likely an Internet ?data black hole? will open up and disrupt the Internet economy, the researchers said in a press release. This black hole would impact targeted advertising, which uses consumer-mined data, CRM, big data analytics and other digital industries that have grown out of the business of tracking and appealing to consumer tendencies. To support this conclusion, the researchers noted that 68 percent of those surveyed would select a ?do-not-track? option if available.

?Unfortunately, in the gold rush that is big data, taking the supply of 'little data'?personal data?for granted seems to be an accident waiting to happen,? Mark Little, principal analyst at Ovum, said in the press release.

Consumers don't want to be an open book and ?are being empowered with new tools and services to monitor, control and secure their personal data as never before, and it seems they increasingly have the motivation to use them,? Little continued.

Internet companies do have a recourse, he suggested, by developing ?positive direct relationships, engagement with consumers and the provision of genuine and trustworthy privacy controls.?

Even so, Little said, those who live on this wealth of data should be prepared for a big change.

?[D]ata controllers need a better feel for the approaching disruption to their supply lines and must invest in tools that help them understand the profile of today's negatively minded users?tomorrow's invisible consumers,? Little concluded.

'Star Wars' reboot director Abrams speaks in Vegas

LAS VEGAS (AP) ? If the force is with die-hard fans, J.J. Abrams will give away a few clues to his vision for the seventh live-action "Star Wars" film.

The acclaimed science-fiction filmmaker is expected to give an opening talk Wednesday at an annual video game industry conference in Las Vegas.

Abrams has become a trusted steward of beloved fantasy universes after his well-received additions to the "Star Trek" and "Mission: Impossible" franchises.

"Star Wars" creator George Lucas facilitated the latest round of "Star Wars" spin-offs when he sold his Lucasfilm empire to The Walt Disney Co. for $4.05 billion last fall.

"Episode VII" is due out in the summer of 2015.

Abrams is expected to discuss multiplatform storytelling with Valve president Gabe Newell at the Design, Innovate, Communicate, Entertain Summit at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino.

Children & Families Bill published ? Special Needs Jungle

logo_dfeThe Children and Families bill, issued in draft form last year, has just been published. Within this bill are the reforms to the way special educational needs are provisioned, including the replacement of the statement with a single Educational, Health and Care plan that will set out all of a child?s needs in one document.

The DfE said:

?Significant reforms to services for vulnerable children and radical proposals to allow parents to choose how they share up to a year?s leave to look after their new-born children have been announced.

The Children and Families Bill, published today, includes reforms to adoption, family justice, an overhaul of Special Educational Needs, reinforcing the role of the Children?s Commissioner and plans to introduce childminders agencies. It also includes the extension of the right to request flexible working to all employees.

The proposed Shared Parental Leave reforms will give parents much greater flexibility about how they ?mix and match? care of their child in the first year after birth. They may take the leave in turns or take it together, provided that they take no more than 52 weeks combined in total.

These changes will allow fathers to play a greater role in raising their child, help mothers to go back to work at a time that?s right for them, returning a pool of talent to the workforce. It will also create more flexible workplaces to boost the economy.

Speaking ahead of a keynote speech Children and Families Minister Edward Timpson said:

I am determined that every young person should be able to fulfil their potential regardless of their background. For this to happen we must tackle the disadvantages faced by our most vulnerable children and families. Our measures in the Children and Families Bill do just that.

In this Bill we will overhaul adoption ? breaking down barriers for adopters and provide more support to children. We will reform family justice ? tackling appalling delays and focussing on the needs of the child. And we will improve services for vulnerable young people ? transforming the Special Educational Needs system and better protecting children?s rights.

The Bill will include provisions on the following reforms:

  • Adoption Reform: the Government wants to reform the system so that more children can benefit more quickly from being adopted into a loving home.
  • Children in care: educational achievement for children in care is not improving fast enough. The Bill will require every Council to have a ?virtual school head? to champion the education of children in the authority?s care, as if they all attended the same school.
  • Shared parental leave: the Government will move away from the current old-fashioned and inflexible arrangements and create a new, more equal system which allows both parents to keep a strong link to their workplace.
  • Flexible working: the Government wants to remove the cultural expectation that flexible working only has benefits for parents and carers, allowing individuals to manage their work alongside other commitments. This will improve the UK labour market by providing more diverse working patterns.
  • Family Justice: the Government wants to remove delays and ensure that the children?s best interests are at the heart of decision making.
  • Special Educational Needs: the Government is radically reforming the system so that it extends from birth to 25, giving children, young people and their parents greater control and choice in decisions and ensuring needs are properly met.
  • Childcare reform: the Government? is reforming childcare to ensure the whole system focuses on providing safe, high-quality care and early education for children. The Bill introduces childminder agencies which will enable more flexible childminding and removing bureaucracy so that it is easier for schools to offer ?wrap-around? care.
  • Children?s Commissioner: the Bill makes the Children?s Commissioner more effective by clarifying his or her independence from Government with a remit to ?protect and promote children?s rights?.

We?ll be looking at the bill in detail and will bring you views and analysis during the week.

'Star Trek Into Darkness' Trailer: J.J. Abrams' New Film Boldly Goes During Super Bowl XLVII (VIDEO)

Star Trek Into Darkness Trailer

"Star Trek Into Darkness" trailer debuted during Super Bowl XLVII.

Just because J.J. Abrams has been named the director of "Star Wars: Episode VII" doesn't mean his "Star Trek" sequel has to hide in the corner. During Super Bowl XLVII on Sunday night, Paramount debuted a new "Star Trek Into Darkness" trailer.

Directed by Abrams, "Star Trek Into Darkness" returns the principal cast of "Star Trek" -- Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Simon Pegg, John Cho, Anton Yelchin, Karl Urban and Zoe Saldana -- while adding Alice Eve and Benedict Cumberbatch to the proceedings. Cumberbatch is playing the "Star Trek Into Darkness" villain, who may be Khan or Robert April or Gary Mitchell or John Harrison. "Shall we begin?" Cumberbatch tells Pine's Captain Kirk during the trailer's crescendo.

In addition to the "Star Trek Into Darkness" Super Bowl trailer, Paramount also unveiled a supplemental "reality app" that allows super fans to glean even more information about Abrams' sequel; head over to AdAge for the skinny on that.

"Star Trek Into Darkness" is out on May 17. Watch the trailer above and head over to Apple to check it out in HD.
