Bode Miller is setting aside his skis for the rest of the World Cup season because of a balky left knee.

The five-time Olympic medalist had a minor arthroscopic procedure performed on the knee earlier this month with the hope of quickly returning to the circuit. But when Miller recently arrived back in Europe, he experienced more discomfort in the knee and opted for another season-ending surgery.

The U.S. ski team didn't release a date for Miller's next operation.

As for his future plans, they seem to center more on rehab than retirement.

"I love ski racing and I love being active so I hope for a solid recovery and to get back to training as soon as possible," Miller said. "I'm still having fun and as long as skiing is enjoyable, I'm going to continue to do it."

The way the 34-year-old Miller churns through a course simply puts a lot of stress on his body. He takes big risks, which result in just as many spectacular wipeouts as wins.

Miller had four podium finishes this season, including a nerve-testing victory on the challenging Birds of Prey downhill course at Beaver Creek in December.

In that race, Miller took more gambles than he typically does, his skis flying in all directions and his body slamming into gates as he barreled his way down the demanding hill. When he crossed the finish line, Miller pumped his fist in exultation ? as much out of relief as satisfaction. He skirted disaster his entire journey through the course.

"Winning again at Beaver Creek was pretty special," said Miller, whose aggressive line only he would take resulted in his 33rd World Cup win. "It was a good season for me."

He tried to ski through the pain the next weekend in Bansko, Bulgaria, and then decided to return to the U.S. in order to get his knee examined, which led to surgery.

Miller was fully planning on skiing last weekend in Crans-Montana, Switzerland, only the knee wouldn't cooperate.

"I couldn't get the range of motion that I needed out of my knee to be competitive," said Miller, who won three medals at the 2010 Vancouver Olympics, including gold in the super-combined. "We thought if I rested a few more days, things would come around, but it didn't happen."

One of the highlights of the season for Miller was trying out the Olympic hill in Sochi, where, provided he's still skiing and makes the squad, he just might get to add to his collection of medals. Miller took fourth in the downhill at the venue, finishing just 0.02 seconds away from a spot on the podium.

"It was cool," Miller said of Sochi. "The mountain is world class ? it's as nice as any of the places we ever go and I think it's going to be amazing to host for the Olympics."

U.S. men's coach Sasha Rearick thinks Miller is only getting better with age.

"Bode had a solid season and was skiing technically and tactically better than he has been in a number of years," Rearick said. "Even though he's been extremely motivated to continue out the season and show what he can do by having fun with ski racing, his body just wasn't able to hold that.

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? The director of "A Separation" dished that the biggest diva on the set of his Oscar-nominated film was none other than his daughter.

Asghar Farhadi joked during a panel discussion with directors vying for the foreign-language film Oscar at Sunday's 84th annual Academy Awards that his daughter, Sarina Farhadi, who plays an estranged Iranian couple's 11-year-old child, was the most difficult person to work with on the film, which is also up for the original screenplay Oscar.

"When I was working with other actors or actresses, out of the respect that they had for me, they would still agree with what I asked them to do, even if they weren't convinced, but this was not the case with my daughter," said Farhadi through a translator on stage at the motion-picture academy's headquarters Saturday morning.

Farhadi revealed that he doesn't completely explain the plots of his movies to child actors because "the less the kids know, they do better." That wasn't the case with "A Separation," which is considered the front-runner for the foreign-language Oscar. Farhadi said his daughter was intimately involved with the story even before he finished the script.

Sarina might be Farhadi's lucky charm. "A Separation" has already racked up several honors this awards season, winning a Golden Globe, Cesar Award, Guldbagge Award and Independent Spirit Award, as well dominating at film festivals and appearing on the top ten lists of many critics.

Farhadi's "A Separation" from Iran will face Michael R. Roskam's crime drama "Bullhead" from Belgium, Philippe Falardeau's immigrant substitute teacher tale "Monsieur Lazhar" from Canada, Joseph Cedar's Talmudic scholar saga "Footnote" from Israel and Agnieszka Holland's World War II drama "In Darkness" from Poland for the foreign-language Oscar at Sunday's ceremony.

Holland had very different demands for the children in her film, which is based on the true story of Polish petty criminal Leopold Socha who hid Jews from Nazis during World War II. She needed Milla Bankowicz and Oliwer Stanczak, a pair of child actors portraying young Jews living in the sewage canals of Lviv, to be comfortable in a dark, gritty setting filled with rats.

"My biggest fear was that they would be afraid of them," said Holland. "They'd been dreaming about meeting the rats, and they played with them like pets, exactly as the real children, Krystyna and Pavel, did."

Two of last year?s most ambitious films, Hugo and The Artist, prove that despite the advancements in modern technology, the classic, heartfelt films of yesteryear are still remembered with everlasting fondness.
Hugo?s story takes place in the early 1930?s after black-and-white silent films had fallen by the wayside to give rise to sound and color films. Through a series of mishaps and new friendships, the titular character, Hugo, who has a great love for movies, revitalizes a former silent filmmaker, Georges M?li?s, who has lost his faith in film.
M?li?s made hundreds upon hundreds of black and white silent films that had a pioneering focus on fantasy and narrative plot. Hugo contains many excerpts from several of M?li?s? silent films, portraying the characters deeply admiring and enjoying the films from an age long gone.
Georges M?li?s has often been cited as the father of many genres of film from fantasy, to science-fiction, to horror. His films have served as timeless inspiration for filmmakers around the world.
Hugo serves as a loving homage to M?li?s? work in pioneering film, and for that reason alone, it deserves its Academy Award nomination for Best Picture.
The Artist, which has also been nominated for several Academy Awards categories including Best Picture and Best Original Screenplay, takes a much more direct approach to honoring the black-and-white silent films of old by being a black-and-white silent film itself.
The Artist?s story revolves around silent film star, George Valentin, who upon attending the premiere of his latest film meets a young reporter, Peppy Miller. Valentin later finds out that Miller is a dancer and demands that she appear in his studio?s next film.
Two years later, Valentin?s studio proposes to cease production of silent films and shift focus to producing sound films. At this, Valentin, who feels sound in film is just a fad of the time, decides to produce and direct his own silent film. Unfortunately, his film flops under competition from a new sound film that stars Peppy Miller.
During the remaining duration of the film, Valentin struggles with finding a balance between holding on to his passion for silent cinema and adapting to the changing times.
The Artist is a film created out of loving nostalgia to honor a past golden age in cinematic history, and it does just that in the most honoring way possible: by directly mirroring those golden-age silent films.
Both Hugo and The Artist are wholly deserving of their Academy Award nominations for serving as reminders of film?s humble and beautiful roots; they show that classic, heartfelt film is, in a word, timeless.

Online journalists censored, attacked: report

NEW YORK?? A global coalition against censorship is needed to protect online journalists and bloggers who are being targeted by repressive governments, a leading advocacy group said Tuesday.

At least 46 journalists died around the world in 2011, the Committee to Protect Journalists said, an increase from the estimate it released in December. Seven journalists were killed in Pakistan, where 29 journalists have been killed in the past five years.

Freelancers, bloggers and citizen journalists like those reporting in the Middle East have few resources to defend themselves against censorship and attacks, the CPJ said. Authoritarian states are buying communications surveillance equipment from Western manufacturers and using it to monitor and target journalists and bloggers, the group said.

The report cited people in Syria who smuggled video footage to reporters across the world and were consequently tracked and tortured by government authorities after their Facebook accounts were hacked by the Syrian Electronic Army, a government-sponsored hacking group.

The New York-based group said the number of deaths while covering dangerous assignments, such as street protests, reached the highest level since 1992. Most of the deaths were in the Middle East and North Africa, where 19 journalists died last year, most while covering the Arab world uprisings.

One third of those killed were freelance journalists, more than double the proportion that freelancers have constituted over the years.

Nine online journalists were killed for their work, including Mexican reporter Maria Elizabeth Mac?as Castro, whose decapitated body was found with a note saying she had been killed for reporting news on social media websites. Her death was the ?rst documented by CPJ that was directly tied to journalism published on social media.

The committee found that 179 journalists were imprisoned as of Dec. 1, an increase driven by widespread imprisonment across the Middle East and North Africa. About half of those work primarily online, the committee said.

The highest number of jailed journalists was in Iran, where 42 reporters were behind bars.

While the Internet and social media has helped democratize the dissemination of information, the nature of such newsgathering leaves journalists especially vulnerable to censorship and retaliation, the CPJ said in its annual survey. There are few legal mechanisms to fight censorship on an international level, the group said.

The CPJ said governments, the business community and human rights organizations must urge intergovernmental groups to create a legal framework to adjudicate press freedom cases at the international level.

In 2010, CPJ hired its first Internet advocacy coordinator to act as a liaison between Silicon Valley and the journalists who depend on their products ? "not only to get the news out, but also to protect them and their sources from physical harm," the report said.

There are still other ways your investment thesis may trip up. Economic conditions may change. Competition may intensify. FDA approvals may be withheld. Management may turn out to be corrupt.

How do you Protect Against these Risks?

The simplest way to protect against the risks that you may not even know exist, is to demand a healthy discount to value of the security you are buying. Also called ?margin of safety?, a typical 30%-40% discount to the intrinsic value is a good protection against unknowns and your own mistakes in your analysis. In cases where the business has significant risks that are KNOWN, it may still be a terrific investment if you can buy the stock at a greater margin of safety. There are very few sure things in investing and the goal is to maximize your returns adjusted for risk. Sometimes, you may have to take some calculated risks when the potential rewards justify it. To protect your downside, a margin of safety approaching 80% or more may be required (subscribe to my stock newsletter and I will email you an example).

All this assumes that you are researching and analyzing the business of the company and its fundamentals before you make the buy decision. Not knowing the business you are investing in exposes you to another type of risk. The stock may indeed be a great investment, but you may not be able to realize the profits if you miss the red flags that might appear in the future.

Risk is Not the Same as Volatility

If you have done your homework on your stock picks and are very confident in your research, and the company continues to execute in a way that affirms your thesis, why should you care if the stock price continues to go up or down on a daily basis. Daily stock fluctuations merely reflect the daily demand and supply of the shares, which for small cap stocks that are less liquid may be extreme. Have the patience to wait for the market to catch up with the value, which it will over time.

That being said, volatility does create opportunities to increase your stake in the company. If the business is truly undervalued, any opportunity to increase ownership should be welcome.

On the flip side, it is quite possible that a stock may hit your valuation target on a short term upswing. In cases like this, there is no reason to not liquidate your position if you can. Taking profits early is always better. You can redeploy your capital in other more undervalued assets. I always go in a new investment with a target sell price and put in a GTC limit order to sell at that price. Sometimes, I may revise the target price up or down depending on how the company performs in the future. This is not the same as a short term speculation strategy. The difference is that you know what you are doing.

A disciplined buy and sell strategy and the commitment to stick with it is essential to manage your risk. It is altogether too easy to get carried away with ?momentum? and ?hype? when the stock price is on the rise. Emotions and sentiments should play no role in your investing.

With this being said, you should get in the habit of reading Wall Street?s reports and ignoring their recommendations. More on this later!
