A wrongful death suit was recently filed by the family of a San Francisco dementia patient who died last year after a shuttle bus driver dropped him off in the wrong location.
The 73-year-old had lived in an assisted living facility in San Francisco and was transported by a shuttle on a daily basis. The shuttle apparently took him to and from an adult day care program.
On one night last February, the man did not arrive at his home as usual. The driver that cold and stormy night was reportedly a substitute driver and apparently did not know the way and where the riders were supposed to be getting off. Additionally, he didn't speak English well.
Some days into the search, the man's body was eventually found less than a mile from where he was supposed to be dropped off. An autopsy revealed that the man had died from hypothermia.
The man apparently suffered from mild dementia, and was not completely impaired, but enough that being dropped off in the wrong location could easily confuse him.
Later investigation found that the man had been negligently dropped off in the wrong location, became confused, and wandered around San Francisco for several days before dying of exposure.
The Jewish Family and Children's Services, where the man was supposed to be dropped off, failed to notify his family for several hours after being notified of his disappearance and it was already dark by the time the family was notified.
The incident apparently occurred after the man had been in the adult day care for program for several years and had ridden the shuttle bus daily without any problems. He had been retired for roughly eight years prior to his death.
The suit accuses the transit agency, the shuttle bus driver and the man's conservator of negligently causing the man's death.
