Not all of Wall Street "friending" Facebook

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Facebook Inc may be having trouble connecting with Wall Street.

The financial houses behind Silicon Valley's largest-ever coming-out party kicked off formal coverage of the company on Wednesday by warning about an uncertain business model, margin pressures and a difficult transition to mobile technology.

The reports, released by banks involved in the IPO after a 40-day quiet period expired, represent Wall Street's broadest assessment of the first U.S. company to debut with a market value of more than $100 billion (64.26 billion pounds).

Morgan Stanley and other major brokerages that handled the blockbuster IPO said it remained unclear how Facebook plans to make money from a growing number of users logging on to the No. 1 social network via smartphones and tablets. That helped send its shares down 3 percent.

Of the 17 brokerages that handled the blockbuster IPO and kicked off coverage of the social networking company on Wednesday, eight recommended against buying into the shares. Two of Facebook's three lead underwriters - Goldman Sachs and JP Morgan - were most bullish, targeting Facebook shares at $45 and $42, respectively.

Morgan Stanley, which has come under scrutiny for its role in driving a $38 IPO price that now appears lofty to some, stuck to a price target that matched its debut level and "overweight" recommendation.

The average of target prices cited on Wednesday was $37.64 - a tad below Facebook's stock market debut price.

Facebook's IPO was to have been the culmination of years of breakneck growth for a company that became a social and cultural phenomenon. Instead, it was marred by a series of trading glitches on its debut, and the company and its underwriters subsequently faced accusations of pumping up the price and inadequate disclosure.

Wednesday's panoply of neutral or equivalent ratings is notable because Wall Street research analysts have a reputation for favouring "buy" ratings, particularly in the high-profile Internet industry where "buy" or equivalent recommendations far outnumber "hold" or lower ratings.

The U.S. Internet sector's 110 companies sport a collective 561 "buy" recommendations or better, versus 352 "hold" or "sell" ratings or their equivalent, according to Thomson Reuters StarMine.

"It says there are real questions out there about the strength of this business model, the fundamental strength of this company, together with its valuation," said Tim Ghriskey, a portfolio manager at Solaris Asset Management.

"We're not buying right now, that's for sure."

HOW LOFTY?

Banks are required to keep their employees handling IPOs apart from analysts recommending stocks in order to avoid conflicts of interest.

In the IPO, banks sold their clients shares of eight-year-old Facebook, started by Mark Zuckerberg in his Harvard dorm room, at a price equivalent to a whopping 100 times 2011 net income per share. That compares with Apple Inc's current multiple of 20.6 and Google Inc's 18.9.

"I respect that a Chinese wall exists, but I think it feeds into the cynicism that Main Street has for Wall Street - that one side of the business was telling them to buy at $38 and the other side of the business now at $32 says we shouldn't buy it," said Steve Birenberg, a portfolio manager at North Lake Capital in Winnetka, Illinois.

Most analysts expect Facebook's large user base to help it corner a substantial share of the Internet advertising market in the long term. But half of the ratings released on Wednesday were "hold" and its equivalent or lower - despite the shares trading sharply down from their $38 IPO price.

Eight slapped top ratings - "buy," "outperform" or "overweight" - on the social networking company.

BMO Capital Markets' Daniel Salmon began his coverage with an "underperform" recommendation and a $25 target, translating into a nearly 25 percent slide from current levels.

"Slowing user growth is one of our primary concerns for Facebook's current valuation," said Salmon, the only analyst giving Facebook a negative rating on Wednesday. He estimated Facebook's annual user growth would be 22 percent next year and 16 percent the year after, much slower than expansion in the past.

The 33 banks that participated in the stock listing were required by securities regulations to wait until 40 days after the first day of trading on May 18 before publishing their views, limiting the research on Facebook until now to a handful of analysts.

Scott Devitt at lead underwriter Morgan Stanley, who told the firm's major clients that he had cut his revenue estimates on Facebook just days before the IPO, said he expects Facebook's ability to turn its mobile features into profit to be a challenge for the next several quarters to several years.

He expects revenue to climb 31 percent in 2012, down sharply from the 88 percent growth in 2011.

"No one is debating the potential opportunity in front of Facebook," said Channing Smith, a portfolio manager at Capital Advisors. "However, there is disagreement in the analyst community on the trajectory of the earnings and revenue growth in the coming years. The assumptions analysts are making are guesswork at this point."

TOPSY-TURVY IPO

Analysts at JP Morgan set a price target of $45 for the stock, suggesting a rise of 36 percent compared with its close of $33.10 on Tuesday. Facebook shares were down 3.1 percent at $32.07 on Wednesday afternoon.

Goldman Sachs set a target price of $42, less aggressive than Morgan Stanley's $38 target.

The company's stock offering, one of the most highly anticipated in history, was marred by a series of technical glitches at the Nasdaq exchange.

Facebook's decision to increase the size of the offering by 25 percent just days ahead of the IPO, as well as concerns about decelerating revenue, also weighed on the stock, which traded as low as $25.52 before regaining some ground to trade in a $31-$33 range in recent days.

RBC said it expected Facebook's stock to hit $40. BofA Merrill Lynch and Morgan Stanley pegged the shares at $38, while Citi and Barclays opted for $35.

The rush of research comes ahead of Facebook's second-quarter results, expected sometime in mid-to-late July.

With about 900 million users, Facebook has become one of the Web's top destinations, challenging established players such as Google Inc and Yahoo Inc.

Even so, revenue growth from ads and other services is slowing. The company, which last year was more than doubling the amount of money collected every quarter compared with a year earlier, reported growth of 45 percent in the first three months of 2012, and revenue declined from the preceding quarter.

General Motors Co' announcement a few days before the IPO that it would stop advertising on Facebook has added to the concerns about Facebook's ability to generate business from advertising.

Despite $4.8 billion in expected revenue in 2012, the average amount of money that Facebook makes through each user is still relatively low, said BofA Merrill Lynch, which expects new advertising formats to accelerate revenue growth in the second half of the year.

In recent weeks, Facebook has unveiled a string of enhancements to its advertising service, allowing marketers to target ads to users on the mobile version of Facebook and to show Facebook users ads based on previous websites that they have visited.

"The company is in the midst of a mobile usage transition and we are cautious on Facebook's revenue trends until new mobile ad revenue models start driving the top line," the analysts at BofA Merrill Lynch wrote.

Several analysts working for the underwriters, including Morgan Stanley and Goldman Sachs, cut financial forecasts for Facebook days before the IPO, after the company cautioned about revenue growth due to a rapid shift of users to mobile devices, where Facebook is less effective at generating revenue.

The analysts briefed some institutional clients about their revised forecasts, sources have previously told Reuters, but retail investors were left in the dark. That revelation has resulted in lawsuits alleging the banks and Facebook failed to fully disclose the company's weakened financial outlook ahead of its IPO.

Intuit Founder Cook on Giving Big Business a Startup Brain Transplant

Can a nearly 30-year-old company be as nimble as a startup? It?s a question Intuit?s Scott Cook has been asking himself a lot lately. The company, which he founded in the early 1980?s, makes some of the world?s most popular personal and business financial software, including TurboTax, Quicken, QuickBooks and Mint, which it acquired in 2009.

As Cook, who now serves as Intuit?s chairman of the executive committee (Brad D. Smith is the company?s president and CEO), sees it this is the golden age of startups. ?We?re living in a fabless economy for startups, particularly software-based.? And those startups certainly have an advantage over older, larger and more established companies. At least when it comes to agility. Big businesses ? at 8,000 employees, Intuit qualifies as a big, established business ? are ?not known for game-changing, speedy, thinking out of the box or breaking paradigms,? Cook told Mashable.

?As a successful scaled company, you cannot run the ship the way you used to. You?ll get run over by a swarm of startups,? lamented Cook.

The obvious answer for Intuit and companies like it is to try and develop a startup mentality.

Getting there, isn?t easy. Big companies are not only hierarchy hives, they are extremely process-driven when it comes to decision making.

Big Ideas

Calcified decision trees hinder even the best ideas. ?Decisions by hierarchy are slower and backward looking,? said Cook. Business leaders believe their job is to make decisions, he explained, not get out of the way of new ideas.

When people talk about innovation and bringing unusual ideas to market, they often point to Google and its 20% time program, which allows employees to use one-fifth of their time on projects outside their normal responsibilities. Some of these crazy ideas become products. Google News and Gmail both started as 20% projects. Some of the best Google Doodles were built in 20% time.

Though Cook never mentioned Google by name he?s clearly a fan of the 20% idea. He warned, though, that if you allow 20% time or, as he likes to call it ?unstructured time? but the ?decisions are still made by guys in suits who still need PowerPoint? it?s not going to work.

To be like a startup, Cook contends, you not only have to allow for experimentation, you have to break down the decision-making process until it?s essentially gone. The transformation means that you go from allowing the boss to make the decision to data from the experiment driving the decision.

You?re ?moving decision making from the most powerful to the most inventive,? said Cook.

Fruits of the Labor

Intuit?s own unstructured time has already resulted in a number of consumer and regional products including a mobile business tool for farmers in India and the SnapTax iPhone App, which allows you to file 1040 EZ tax forms simply by taking a smartphone picture of your W2 form. The apps OCRs (reads the text), asks nine questions and then files the form. In the case of the former, it survived two attempts to kill the project and now nearly a million farmers use the product. Cook readily admits that those working on their unstructured projects still have to get someone?s approval, but ?the goal is to eliminate the need to have someone sign off on the experiment.? They want to allow ideas and teams to flourish ?without the need for management to get involved,? said Cook.

Intuit?s so committed to the idea of startup-like innovation that another small, two-person team built and launched a proprietary in-house tool to collect, build and manage new ideas. Called, naturally, ?Brainstorm,? Cook described it as a mix of Facebook, Amazon reviews and blogs.

Any Intuit employee can add new ideas, which others comment on, debate and build upon. Brainstorm is also used to collect teams and resources for ideas. Intuit employees request volunteers with certain expertise and often get them.

Intuit is using these tools and unstructured time to go faster and act like a big ?network of startups.? Still, Cook does not believe startups have all the advantages. Despite the agile thinking, speed and lack of institutional decision-making, it can still be tough out there in the business world, even for the most nimble startup: ?The odds of success have not gone up,? warned Cook.

I am in love with this cookbook. Why? Because I have tried three recipes and they have been easy to make and hits with my family. I've been on a chicken kick so we've had "Simple Salsa Chicken" "Pineapple Teriyaki Chicken" and "Zippy Paprika Chicken".

The "Simple Salsa Chicken" I made as directed and it was delicious with spanish rice. I didn't want to go out in the summer heat so I 'grilled' the "Pineapple Teriyaki Chicken" on my grill pan.

My chicken breasts were too thick (should have realized that before I started cooking) so I cut the chicken into strips and skipped the provolone cheese on top. Although I had to modify, it was still quite tasty. I remembered to slice my chicken breasts thinner for "Zippy Paprika Chicken" - this was probably THE favorite of the three. I didn't have the marinade mix called for so I just substituted spicy paprika.

Islamists hail Morsy's Egypt victory, West cautious

LONDON (Reuters) - Islamists around the world hailed Mohamed Morsy's election as Egypt's first freely chosen president as a victory for their cause on Sunday while the West, Gulf states and Israel reacted with caution, wary of his political agenda.

Closely watched from Gaza to the Gulf, the Muslim Brotherhood's candidate's win over former army general Ahmed Shafik was widely seen as an historic event with far-reaching consequences beyond Egypt's borders.

"The Egyptian nation did not elect a president just for Egypt, but for the Arab and Islamic nations too," said Fawzi Barhoum, a spokesman for Hamas in Gaza.

Viewing the victory through the prism of the Arab Spring uprisings that toppled leaders in Tunisia, Libya, and Yemen as well as Egypt, Islamists said they saw Morsy's win as proof their "revolution" was on the march.

"Mohamed Morsy a president for Egypt, thank God," said Mohammed al-Qahtani, a co-founder of the Saudi Civil and Political Rights Association (ACPRA), a group pushing for democracy in the Gulf state.

"This is a victory for the Arab revolutions," he said in a post on social networking site Twitter.

The United States, which provides vast military aid to Egypt, welcomed the result but made it clear it expected Morsy to ensure stability and not to veer to extremes.

"We believe that it is important for President-elect Morsy to take steps at this historic time to advance national unity by reaching out to all parties and constituencies in consultations about the formation of a new government," White House spokesman Jay Carney said in a statement, calling on the new leader to ensure Egypt remains "a pillar of regional peace".

Iran, which prides itself on its own Islamist credentials, paid fulsome tribute to those it called "the martyrs of the (Egyptian) revolution", whom it said were responsible for ushering in "a splendid vision of democracy."

"The revolutionary movement of the Egyptian people... is in its final phases of a new era of developments in the Middle East and the Islamic Awakening," the foreign ministry said.

In Saudi Arabia, the world's number one oil producer, the government was silent. It has had poor relations with the Muslim Brotherhood, with many of the kingdom's officials accusing it of backing demands for internal political change.

However, analysts said Saudi Arabia would have to work with the new Egyptian president.

"I think (the Saudis) are going to be very practical about it. More and more they will discover common interests in the economy, in politics, on how to deal with Iran," said Jamal Khashoggi, a prominent former newspaper editor with ties to the ruling family.

"BUILD BRIDGES"

In Britain, William Hague, the foreign minister, also gave a muted welcome to Morsy's victory.

"It will be important for the new government to stand for national unity and reconciliation, to build bridges across Egyptian society and to uphold human rights, including the rights of women and religious minorities, and the rule of law," Hague said in a statement.

France issued a similar statement. "It is key today that the transition, which started in February 2011, continues so that a democratic and pluralist political system establishes itself in Egypt, guaranteeing civil liberties and political freedom to all citizens," the office of President Francois Hollande said.

Israel voiced respect for Morsy's victory and the "democratic process", but called on the new administration in Cairo to maintain the peace accord maintained by Egypt's ousted leader Hosni Mubarak for 33 years.

Across the Gulf, reaction was cautious.

In the United Arab Emirates, the WAM news agency said the government respected "the choice of the Egyptian people in the context of its democratic march".

However, Dahi Khalfan, the Dubai police chief, was more skeptical. "An unfortunate choice," he said in a tweet. "The repercussions of this choice will not be light to poor ordinary people."

Bahrain's state news agency said King Hamad congratulated Morsy, praising "an atmosphere of freedom and democracy".

In Iraq, Ali al-Moussawi, an aide to Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki, said the government welcomed the win as "a major step in the right direction to boost democracy in Egypt".

A senior Western diplomat in Cairo made it clear the West was trying to put a brave face on Morsy's win and was keen to stress the nature of the election that brought him to power.

"Egypt has a civilian, democratically elected president for the first time in its history," the diplomat said.

"An imperfect presidency is way better than none at all," he said, urging the Brotherhood not to provoke the army, which has curbed presidential powers, into limiting them anymore.

STREET REACTION

Many Egyptians living abroad expressed relief, saying they felt their homeland finally had a chance to flourish.

In Riyadh, Abdulhamid Saraya, 60, an expatriate Egyptian engineer, said Morsy's win was a watershed.

"I am happy we are ending 30 years of injustice. (Ahmed) Shafik's loss is an end to a dark age that forced us to leave the country and live abroad most of our lives to escape injustice and poor living conditions," he told Reuters.

Muslims elsewhere said they were also pleased with the result, but some had advice for the new president.

In Algeria, Atef Kedadra, a senior journalist on the country's El Khabar daily newspaper told Reuters Morsy's victory carried tremendous symbolic importance but he would now have to show he was inclusive. "If he appoints only Islamists, he will lose because the Islamists are not used to ruling a country."

In Abu Dhabi, a 37-year-old government employee who gave his name as Seif, was upbeat. "I am sure Egypt has a bright future. The Brothers are forced to keep up with modernity, progress and openness. They don't want to destroy or harm their country."

Catherine al-Talli, a prominent Syrian human rights lawyer, said events in Egypt were likely to encourage the opposition battling President Bashar al-Assad.

"It shows that the popular will brings about democratic change, and that when the people chose to rise against repression they can defeat it," she said.

In Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, Laya, a woman who goes to Cairo frequently, said she was concerned about how Morsy's victory would change the way women were treated.

"They will think it's now okay to approach girls and reprimand them for the way they dress," she told Reuters.

BOSTON (AP) ? Kevin Youkilis' farewell at Fenway Park on Sunday even was moving for Cody Ross, one of the newest members of the Red Sox.

On the day Youkilis' 8? years in Boston came to an end, Ross hit two homers and drove in five runs to lift the Red Sox to a 9-4 win over the Atlanta Braves.

Youkilis was traded to the Chicago White Sox for utilityman Brent Lillibridge and right-hander Zach Stewart after the game.

"It brought a tear to my eye, that's for sure," said Ross, in his first season with Boston. "To see him run off and tip his hat, he had some tears in his eyes, I got goosebumps. Special time. I know how much he means to this city. He won two World Series here, played his heart and soul out every day and just a great teammate. He'll be missed."

Before leaving the Red Sox for good,Youkilis was lifted for a pinch-runner after hitting a triple in the seventh inning.

Youkilis was greeted with a hug near the first base line from Nick Punto, who pinch-ran for him, and many of his teammates as he came to the top step of the dugout.

The burely Youkilis was then urged to come out for a curtain call by his teammates, coaches and manager Bobby Valentine before heading down the steps. He was given a lengthy standing ovation and the fans chanted "Yook." The entire dugout looked empty, with everyone standing on the top step and applauding Youkilis.

Valentine thought it was a fitting sendoff.

"It ended the right way," he said. "It was the longest run to the dugout. ... I told the players what I was going to do and he did the rest."

The nameplate above Youkilis' locker was gone when the clubhouse door opened and there was a lineup card there after the Red Sox's the ninth win in 11 games.

The day started with players' kids running around the clubhouse on 'Family Day.' About an hour after the game, many of the players were on the field wearing their jerseys with their wives and children.

"We've been friends a long time ? 10 years," Punto said. "It was kind of a goodbye."

Youkilis was part of the 2004 and '07 championships.

"It's tough because I know how hard he's played and he's given everything he has in every game he's every put on the Red Sox uniform. Sad," said second baseman Dustin Pedroia, a teammate of Youkilis since 2007.

Boston completed interleague play with a winning record for the eighth straight season (11-7).

Jason Heyward continued his torrid June for the Braves, hitting a solo homer among his three hits.

Atlanta, which lost for the ninth time in 13 games, closed interleague play 8-10. The Braves lost two of three to the Red Sox after taking two of three against the Yankees in New York.

"We were .500 against the American League East on the road," said Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez. "You always like to get a little greedy. We had an opportunity to win two out of three here and we just couldn't convert it."

Aaron Cook (1-1), making just his second start with the Red Sox and first since going on the disabled list May 6 after sustaining a cut on his left knee covering home plate, gave up three runs ? two earned ? six hits and didn't walk or strike out anyone in five innings.

Braves starter Mike Minor (3-6) gave up three homers and allowed seven runs ? four earned ? in 4 2-3 innings.

"Just really basically is what it boils down to is I couldn't throw a fastball for a strike on the inner half today," Minor said.

Adrian Gonzalez added a solo homer for Boston, which won six of seven series against NL opponents.

Heyward is hitting .391 this month with five homers and 12 RBIs.

Cook filled-in for Clay Buchholz, who was placed on the 15-day disabled list Sunday with what Valentine called a "gastrointestinal issue."

The Red Sox jumped ahead with a four-run fourth against Minor. After breezing through the first three innings allowing just a pair of singles, Minor walked the first two batters in the inning. Ross then homered into the first row of seats above the Green Monster, making it 3-0. One pitch later, Gonzalez sliced a flyball into the Monster seats to make it 4-0.

The Braves capitalized on Cook's throwing error for a run during a three-run fifth. Eric Hinske had a two-run double into the center field triangle after Heyward and Andrelton Simmons singled. Juan Francisco then bounced back to the mound and Cook had Hinske off the bag, but threw widely past third to allow him to score to make it 4-3. Cook retired the next three batters, finishing his work.

In the fifth, Boston scored three unearned runs off Minor when Will Middlebrooks had a sacrifice fly and Ross followed with a two-run homer completely out of Fenway Park over the Monster, making it 7-3. Robert Kraft to join alma mater's sports hall of fame

Columbia University officials say they?ll induct New England Patriots [team stats] owner Robert Kraft into the New York City school?s sports hall of fame this year.

The 1963 Columbia graduate played on the university?s freshman football team in 1959, and on the varsity lightweight football team in 1960.

An injury Kraft suffered during his junior year ended his playing time for the school.

The university?s Intercollegiate athletics director called Kraft "a leader in every sense of the word," saying he excelled at the school as he has in his professional career.

Since Kraft bought the Patriots in 1994, the NFL franchise has won three Super Bowls.

He also founded the New England Revolution soccer franchise.

University of North Dakota Drops Fighting Sioux Logo ? But is it Gone For Good?

Good afternoon, Atlantic Coast Conference and college sports fans.? Jeffrey Fann is on vacation this week and he has graciously give me the opportunity to post this week on All Sports Discussion.? This is a great sports blog and I appreciate the opportunity Jeff has given me.

Seven years ago, UND was told by the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) to retire the Fighting Sioux logo or risk severe penalties (UND, for example, would lose the opportunity to host NCAA regional hockey championships).? UND appealed the NCAA?s decision ? lost ? and then sued.? UND settled the lawsuit with the NCAA in 2007.? UND agreed that Fighting Sioux logo would be retired in three years, unless the three major tribes in North Dakota approved of its use.? Please see more about the legal battles here.? Under the terms of the settlement, the NCAA gave North Dakota three years to obtain permission from two major Sioux tribes. One tribe approved, but the second never voted on the request.? Thus, in December 2010, UND was forced to take actions to drop the logo. ? The logo, however, was un-retired the first time in March 2011 after state lawmakers passed a bill requiring UND to use the logo.? In November 2011, the North Dakota legislators changed course and retired the logo again.? In February 2012, logo supporters then gathered enough signatures to force the statewide vote.

About three weeks ago on this site, I made a pitch on this site to North Dakota voters to vote ?Yes? and retire the Fighting Sioux logo.? My major arguments were that UND would lose its invite to the Big Sky Conference, see its athletic revenue would decrease significantly, become isolated from athletic and academic partnerships, and basically become a little brother to North Dakota State University.

Let me tell you ? those North Dakota voters have some sense ? they voted by a 70-30 margin to retire the Fighting Sioux logo. ?Under the terms of the vote, UND cannot pursue a new nickname/logo until January 1, 2015 (this will ensure that a cooling off period is in place).

Yet, even with this 40 point loss, there are still some supporters that plan to bring forth a vote on an amendment to the North Dakota Constitution to require use of the Fighting Sioux logo.? Tomorrow, in part two of this segment, I?ll outline what the UND athletic world would look like if it were forced to retain the Fighting Sioux logo.? Specifically, I?ll develop a travel itinerary for Sean Johnson, spokesman for the Spirit Lake Committee for Understanding and Respect (and a lead supporter of the constitutional amendment I spoke of above).? He will need to know the most cost effective travel methods to get to Newark, NJ for that new heated rivalry with the New Jersey Institute of Technology.
