White House announces anti-botnet initiative

The White House has been drumming up momentum for tighter internet privacy laws for a while now, and today it's furthering that online safety agenda with a new initiative for combating botnets. Washington just announced a pilot program for fighting viruses, citing a whopping five million PCs infected worldwide this year. The program will use principles outlined by the Industry Botnet Group, with the main goal being to educate internet users on the dangers of cyberspace while preventing botnets from spreading by sharing data about infected computers. The White House is working with the Information Sharing and Analysis Center to develop and implement the "botnet pilot," presumably to enact those anti-virus principles.

Go for the Gold Campaign Recognizes Chicago Schools ...

We are pleased to announce that 37 CPS schools will be recognized today for meeting high standards for student health and wellness through Go for the Gold! Twenty-eight of the schools have been certified for meeting USDA standards for healthy food, fitness, and nutrition education set by the HealthierUS School Challenge. Certification for another nine CPS schools is pending.? In the Midwest, this is the largest number of schools in one district to achieve the HealthierUS School Challenge.

Go for the Gold is a partnership of Chicago Public Schools (CPS) and Healthy Schools Campaign with the USDA?s Midwest Region and the Illinois State Board of Education Department of Nutrition. The HealthierUS School Challenge is the program that First Lady Michelle Obama is urging schools to pursue. The 37 schools being recognized join 19 CPS schools that earned Go for the Gold certification last year.

Since its launch in August 2010, Go for the Gold has connected Chicago Public Schools with health and wellness resources ranging from nutrition education initiatives to sports and physical activity programs. The challenge includes standards for school food, physical activity, physical education and nutrition education. The campaign builds on the school food program that CPS rolled out for the 2010-11 school year, which meets and in many cases exceeds the gold standard of the HealthierUS School Challenge.

?Go for the Gold brings together parents, school leaders, chefs, school nurses, and many others to support schools in providing a healthy environment for Chicago children,? said Rochelle Davis, President and CEO of Healthy Schools Campaign.

This year Go for the Gold has received support from an obesity prevention project called Healthy Places, a joint effort of the Chicago Department of Public Health (CDPH) and the Consortium to Lower Obesity in Chicago Children (CLOCC).? Both CPS and HSC are lead partners with Healthy Places, working to institute program and policy change and increase organizational capacity to better promote health and wellness for children across the district. Also through Healthy Places, four community-based organizations are supporting over a dozen schools in neighborhoods of high need and health disparity across Chicago to meet the criteria of the HealthierUS School Challenge and participate in Go for the Gold.

??I commend these schools for their accomplishment as this is a testimony to our city?s commitment to addressing a growing obesity rate amongst our youth,? said Dr. Bechara Choucair, CDPH Commissioner. ?Our public health agenda, Healthy Chicago, identifies obesity prevention as one of the top health priorities in Chicago. 2. Lighten and brighten

3. Repair electrical and plumbing

However, the survey finds that the home improvement projects that offer the highest potential price increase to a home?s resale value continues to be updating the kitchen and bathroom. Home sellers could potentially see a $3,255 price increase to their home at resale by tackling kitchen and bathroom projects, according to the HomeGain survey. But those projects aren?t usually cheap to do. David the Farmer??the nickname they've given their star prosthesis tester, though he is actually employed as a full-time, on-site ?mechanic?is one of a limited pool of amputees fitted with the Symbionic Leg: an artificial knee, ankle, and foot that are integrated into a single bionic limb.

On the farmland and surrounding terrain, in tall grass, and on moss-sprayed plains of volcanic rock, Ingvason regularly destroys his leg. He fouls the motors in muck and sludge, burns them out through unremitting use, and generally grinds one of the most sophisticated auto-adaptive devices on the planet, each one worth more than some sedans, into an inert, cybernetic paperweight. According to ?ssur's new technology search manager, Magn?s ?Oddsson, all Ingvason has to do is call and they'll hand-deliver a new limb. More often, he swings by Reykjav?k himself wearing a backup leg and asking for a repair or replacement. Whatever David the Farmer wants, he gets?the punishment he metes out to his leg, and the data that result, are simply too useful.

?ssur began selling the Symbionic model as the world's first ?commercially available bionic leg last fall. It represents a significant shift in prostheses. The traditional half-measures, the stand-ins for lost limbs and senses, are now being imbued with machine intelligence. Ingvason's leg is, in fact, a robot, with sensors that detect its environment and gauge his intentions, and processors that determine the angle of his carbon-fiber foot as it swings forward. The same approach is being applied to prosthetic arms, in which complex algorithms determine how hard to grasp a water bottle or when to absorb the impact of a fall. Vision- and hearing-based prostheses bypass faulty organs and receptors entirely, processing and translating raw sensor data into signals that the brain can interpret. All of these bionic systems actively adapt to their users, restoring the body by serving it.

Take, for example, one of the most common prosthesis failures. A mechanical knee typically goes rigid as the heel lands, supporting the user's weight, then unlocks when pressure is applied to the toe. If that toe contact comes too early the leg collapses under its owner. The Symbionic Leg isn't so easily fooled. Force sensors and accelerometers keep track of the leg's position relative to the environment and the user. Onboard processors analyze this input at a rate of 1000 times per second, deciding how best to respond?when to release tension and when to maintain it.

Since the leg knows where it is throughout each stride, achieving a rudimentary form of proprio?ception, it takes more than a stubbed toe to trigger a loose knee. If the prosthesis still somehow misreads the situation, the initial lurch of the user falling should activate its stumble-?recovery mode. Like antilock brakes for the leg, the actuators will slow to a halt, and magnetically controlled fluid in the knee will become more viscous, creating resistance, as the entire system strains to keep the person from crumpling or toppling.

The result, Ingvason says, is that he rarely falls, or no more often than someone with two biological legs. He can drive ATVs, hike across glaciers, even ride a horse while herding sheep. "I don't have to think about it," he says. Before he went bionic, Ingvason fell constantly. "With the old knee, it was every day, often more than once in a day," he says. "If I was walking and the toe hit something while swinging forward and I stepped on it, then I just went down. Now I'm walking on uneven ground and high grass and sand and mud and everything."

Ingvason's newly delivered limb is another Symbionic Leg, loaded with upgraded software that will allow the knee and the ankle to communicate with each other. ?ssur plans to develop this feature over the coming years, ?establishing what Oddsson calls networked intelligence. After putting it on, Ingvason limps, awkwardly at first, across dirt and gravel, past the rusting hulks of trucks and cars. Within a few minutes, the robot has calibrated itself.

With Ingvason's pant leg hitched up, it's impossible not to watch the limb in action. It's harsh and alien. The gray polymer shell, which partially conceals aircraft-grade aluminum, seems too skinny to support his weight; the ankle, too delicate for the 10,000 newtons of force it was built to withstand. VIENNA (Reuters) - Iran has significantly stepped up its output of low-enriched uranium and total production in the last five years would be enough for at least five nuclear weapons if refined much further, a U.S. security institute said.

The Institute for Science and International Security (ISIS), a think-tank which tracks Iran's nuclear program closely, based the analysis on data in the latest report by the U.N. International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) which was issued on Friday.

Progress in Iran's nuclear activities is closely watched by the West and Israel as it could determine how long it could take Tehran to build atomic bombs, if it decided to do so. Iran denies any plan to and says its aims are entirely peaceful.

During talks in Baghdad this week, six world powers failed to convince Iran to scale back its uranium enrichment program. They will meet again in Moscow next month to try to defuse a decade-old standoff that has raised fears of a new war in the Middle East that could disrupt oil supplies.

Friday's report by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), a Vienna-based U.N. body, showed Iran was pressing ahead with its uranium enrichment work in defiance of U.N. resolutions calling on it to suspend the activity.

It said Iran had produced almost 6.2 tons of uranium enriched to a level of 3.5 percent since it began the work in 2007 - some of which has subsequently been further processed into higher-grade material.

This is nearly 750 kg more than in the previous IAEA report issued in February, and ISIS said Iran's monthly production had risen by roughly a third.

"This total amount of 3.5 percent low enriched uranium hexafluoride, if further enriched to weapon grade, is enough to make over five nuclear weapons," ISIS said in its analysis.

It added, however, that some of Iran's higher-grade uranium had been converted into reactor fuel and would not be available for nuclear weapons, at least not quickly.

HIGHER ENRICHMENT

Friday's IAEA report also said environmental samples taken in February at Iran's Fordow facility - buried deep beneath rock and soil to protect it from air strikes - showed the presence of particles with enrichment levels of up to 27 percent.

Iran's permanent representative to the body played down the findings, saying some western media sought to turn a technical issue into a political one.

"This matter is a routine technical discussion that is currently being reviewed by experts," IRNA quoted Ali Asghar Soltanieh, as saying.

The IAEA report suggested it was possible that particles of uranium enriched to higher-than-declared levels could be the result of a technical phenomenon. Experts say that while it is embarrassing for Iran, there is no real cause for concern.

The U.N. agency also said satellite images showed "extensive activities" at the Parchin military complex which inspectors want to check over suspicions that research relevant to nuclear weapons was done there.

After talks in Tehran earlier this week, IAEA chief Yukiya Amano said the two sides were close to an agreement to let inspectors resume investigations into suspected nuclear explosive experiments in Iran.

NUCLEAR GOALS

Enriched uranium can be used to fuel power plants, which is Iran's stated purpose, or to provide material for bombs, if refined to a much higher degree. The West suspects that may be Iran's ultimate goal despite the Islamic Republic's denials.

Iran began enriching uranium to a fissile concentration of 20 percent in 2010, saying it needed this to fuel a medical research reactor. It later expanded the work sharply by launching enrichment at Fordow.

It alarmed a suspicious West since such enhanced enrichment accomplishes much of the technical leap towards 90 percent - or weapons-grade - uranium.

Central to the talks in Baghdad were attempts to get Iran to halt enrichment to 20 percent, in exchange for measures to ease sanctions and assistance with safety at its nuclear plants.

Iran demanded world powers expressly confirm its right to enrich uranium.

Iran has installed more than 50 percent more enrichment centrifuges at Fordow, the IAEA report said. Although not yet being fed with uranium, the new machines could be used to further boost Iran's output of uranium enriched to 20 percent.

ISIS said Iran still appeared to be experiencing problems in its testing of production-scale units of more advanced centrifuges that would allow it to refine uranium faster, even though it had made some progress.

Jobs? top 10% of Military Friendly Franchises in 2012. For certain The Dwyer Group concepts, the proportion of veteran-owned franchise units is as high as 1 in 5.

Just a few days before Memorial Day, the news couldn?t have come at a better time. The research was conducted in collaboration with G.I. Jobs and MilitaryFranchising.com, both IFA members.

Many of these new franchises are attributable to the IFA?s VetFran program, which was founded by The Dwyer Group?s founder Don Dwyer in 1991. The VetFran program has brought together over 450 franchisors to offer financial incentives, mentoring, and training to veterans interested in becoming franchise owners. On November 11, 2011, the IFA also launched Operation Enduring Opportunity through VetFran, an campaign to hire and recruit 75,000 veterans and spouses and 5,000 wounded warriors by 2014.

As the founders of VetFran, The Dwyer Group is proud of the support it offers veterans within its system, including with special vendor discounts and a quarterly newsletter for veterans.
