Ballet BC presents the world premiere of its take on Giselle. Resident choreographer?Jos? Navas gives the legendary ballet a contemporary spin during the dance?s run at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre (649 Cambie St) April 25 ? 27.

So what makes this version of Giselle different?

In a press release, Ballet BC Artistic Director Emily Molnar said that ?This will be the first time in our history that we take on the enormous creative challenge of reinventing an iconic ballet and presenting it from a modern perspective. This version of Giselle will tell the story through elements that are the narrative equivalents in our contemporary urban lives, making it relevant to 21st century audiences.?

The original ballet, set to music by Adolphe Adam with choreography by Jean Coralli and Jules Perrot,?is considered by many to be the pinnacle of Romanticism in dance. Based on a poem by German poet Heinrich Heine,?Giselle is a story of class struggle, sacrifice and doomed love between Giselle, a young peasant girl, and a nobleman, Albrecht.

Giselle?was first presented by the Ballet?du Th??tre de l?Acad?mie Royale de Musique?at the Salle Le Peletier?in Paris, France, Paris, on June 28, 1841.

Choreographer Navas says that his version ?is not driven by realism. There will be a stage within the stage and the audience will see the performers undergoing the transformation from ordinary person on the outer stage to the character in the ballet on the inner stage.? So a little post-modernism with your classical ballet!

The all-Canadian design team for this production of Giselle? includes visual components by well-known Quebec graphic artist and illustrator Lino, costumes by Vancouver-based Linda Chow and lighting design by Montreal-based Marc Parent.
