Rep. Steve LaTourette is betting Senate Democrats will bend and appoint conferees to negotiate differences on a payroll tax extension bill.
"It's one thing to stand in the Rotunda or Statuary Hall and stamp your Jimmy Choo shoes and say you're not going to appoint conferees, it's another thing to actually not appoint conferees for the only vehicle that's left in town that actually solves this problem," LaTourette (R-Ohio) said Tuesday.
Continue ReadingLaTourette didn't name names, but he likely was referring to House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi's impromptu press conference late Monday just steps from the House floor where she ripped tea party Republicans for leading the opposition to a Senate-passed bill extending the payroll tax cut for two months.
Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid has said he has no plans to bring senators back to Washington for conference negotiations with the House. But LaTourette said he expected Reid to bend, with House-Senate negotiators passing a stop-gap tax bill if they get too close to the end of the year.
"If we work out the details, we can pass something that continues things for three days," he said.
"If I were you, I'd sort of circle Jan. 3," LaTourette added. "It's the day we're going to adjourn this session sine die and start the next session of Congress. I'd think there might be something happening Jan. 3."
Asked about LaTourette's Jimmy Choo dig, Pelosi spokesman Drew Hammill replied, "Clearly, he thinks more about women's shoes than the leader does," he said, adding that Pelosi doesn't remember what kind of shoes she wore Monday.
"What the American people will remember is that House Republicans blocked an up or down vote on a bipartisan bill to prevent a tea party tax increase that could have went to the president for his signature immediately," Hammill added.
