Crossville will focus on self improvement in 7-on-7s

First-year Crossville High School football coach Robi Coker said self improvement and not wins and losses will be the top priority for his team at upcoming 7-on-7 passing camps.

?We really want to focus on what we?re doing and why we?re doing it,? he said. ?We want to get a grasp on our offensive concepts and coverage concepts. It?s a great opportunity to go against other people, get different looks.

?Your linebackers can get in bad habits because they?re always dropping back, but it?s really good for the quarterbacks and wide receivers to get on the same page.?

Coker gave his team this week and next week off after a productive June, when the Lions were busy with voluntary workouts.

Crossville has 34 players in grades 10-12.

?They?re a good bunch,? Coker said. ?The kids are working extremely hard. We have 34 kids who are paying the price. We?ve pushed through adversity and gotten a little tougher. We?re just working together to get better each and every day.?

Coker was hired earlier this year to replace Trey Pike, who resigned following one semester on the job. The Lions went 3-7 in 2011, the latest in a string of mostly disappointing seasons that featured few playoff appearances and a revolving door at the head coach?s office.

Crossville has gone through five head coaches since Chris Garmon stepped down following the 2002 season. The Lions have enjoyed only three winning season since that time ? 2003, 2004 and 2010. They haven?t made the playoffs since ?04.

Now Coker, a 2000 Crossville graduate and the former coordinator of basketball operations for the Ole Miss men, has taken on the challenge of restoring to prominence a program that was once among the state?s best.

Coker likes what he?s seen this summer.

?I believe they have really bought into to what they?re doing,? he said. ?They?ve got some familiar faces that they trust in Coach [Danny] Smith, Coach [Miles] Holcomb, Coach [Rodney] White, and there?s so newcomers like myself Coach [Phillip] Johnson and Coach [Bubba] Walls.

?I think it?s been a great mixture, not only with the players but with the coaching staff as well. They can see a change in the direction of the program.?

Smith will continue to serve as defensive coordinator. Walls, the head coach at Ashville the past three years, will coordinate the offense.

White coaches the secondary. Holcomb works with the linebackers and offensive line. Johnson works with both the offensive and defensive fronts.

Crossville will take part in 7-on-7 passing camps at Section (July 19), Albertville (July 24) and Fyffe (Aug 2).

Coker said improving means staying focused on the present.

?Right now we?re focusing on getting better every day,? Coker said. ?You can?t worry about tomorrow, you?ve got to get better today, whether it?s 7-on-7, conditioning or the weight room. We?ve got to focus on Crossville right now. We?ve got to focus on this particular day.?

COMMUNITY: Coker praised the help his program is getting from the community.

?June has been a very productive month not only for the players but also for the community,? he said. ?The community has been relentless as far as getting our facilities back on the right track. The people of Crossville have been great and have really worked.?
