NEW YORK (AP) ? As NBA players and owners wait to see who will blink first, fans are stuck staring at a blank calendar.

NBA Commissioner David Stern canceled the rest of the November games Friday, saying there will not be a full NBA season "under any circumstances."

The move came about after labor negotiations broke down again when both sides refused to budge on how to split the league's revenues, the same issue that derailed talks last week.

Now, a full month of NBA games have been canceled, and Stern said there's no way of getting them back.

"We held out that joint hope together, but in light of the breakdown of talks, there will not be a full NBA season under any circumstances," he said.

"It's not practical, possible or prudent to have a full season now," added Stern, who previously canceled the first two weeks of the season.

And he repeated his warnings that the proposals might now get even harsher as the league tries to make up the hundreds of millions of dollars that will be lost as the lockout drags on.

"We're going to have to recalculate how bad the damage is," Stern said. "The next offer will reflect the extraordinary losses that are piling up now."

Just a day earlier, Stern had said he would consider it a failure if the sides didn't reach a deal in the next few days and vowed they would take "one heck of a shot" to get it done.

Instead, negotiations broke off again over the division of basketball-related income, just as they did last Thursday. Union executive director Billy Hunter said the league again insisted it had to be split 50-50, while Stern said Hunter just walked out and left rather than discuss going below 52 percent.

Owners are insistent on a 50-50 split, while players last formally proposed they get 52.5 percent, leaving them about $100 million apart annually. Players were guaranteed 57 percent in the previous collective bargaining agreement.

"Derek (Fisher) and I made it clear that we could not take the 50-50 deal to our membership. Not with all the concessions that we granted," Hunter said. "We said we got to have some dollars."

Instead, they'll now be out roughly $350 million, the losses Hunter previously projected for each month the players were locked out. He believed a full season could be played if a deal were made this weekend, but Stern emphatically ruled out any hope of that now.

"These are not punitive announcements; these are calendar generated announcements," Stern said.

No further talks have been scheduled.

There was a sense of optimism entering the day after progress was made on salary cap issues during about 24 hours of talks over the previous two days. Then the sides brought the revenue split back into the discussion Friday and promptly got stuck on both issues.

Stern said the NBA owners were "willing" to go to 50 percent. But he said Hunter was unwilling to "go a penny below 52," that he had been getting many calls from agents and then closed up his book and walked out of the room.

Hunter said the league initially moved its target down to 47 percent during Friday's six-hour session, then returned to its previous proposal of 50 percent of revenues.

"We made a lot of concessions, but unfortunately at this time it's not enough, and we're not prepared or unable at this time to move any further," Hunter said.

Union president Fisher said it was difficult to say why talks broke down, or when they would start up again.

"We're here, we've always been here, but today just wasn't the day to try and finish this out," he said.

There was some good news.

Deputy Commissioner Adam Silver said there was essentially a "tentative agreement" on most system issues, with Stern rattling off some of them: Owners agreed to keep the midlevel exception starting at $5 million a year; and contract lengths would be five years for players staying with their teams and four when leaving for another.

"And then we hit a wall," Stern said.

The small groups that were meeting the previous two days grew a bit Friday. Union vice presidents Chris Paul ? wearing a Yankees cap for his trip to New York ? and Theo Ratliff joined the talks, and economist Kevin Murphy returned after he was unavailable Thursday. Mavericks owner Mark Cuban stayed for the session after taking part Thursday.

Fisher said there were still too many restrictions in the owners' proposal. Players want to keep a system similar to the old one, and fear owners' ideas would limit player movement and the choices available to them in free agency.

And though they might be inclined to give up one if they received more concessions on the other, players make it sound as if they are the ones doing all the giving back.

The old cap system allowed teams to exceed it through the use of a number of exceptions, many of which the league wants to tweak or even eliminate. Hunter has called a hard cap a "blood issue" to players, and though the league has backed off its initial proposal calling for one, players think the changes owners want would work like one.

"We've told them that we don't want a hard cap. We don't want a hard cap any kind of way, either an obvious hard cap or a hard cap that may not be as obvious to most people but we know it works like a hard cap," Hunter said. "And so you get there, and then all of a sudden they say, 'Well, we also have to have our number.' And you say, 'Well wait a minute, you're not negotiating in good faith.'"

But if players think what's being proposed is a hard cap, here's another warning: Silver won't rule out the league seeking one again.

"Our response is then let's have a hard cap, which is what we wanted," he said.

"We don't think it's a hard cap. ... We've all been wasting our time if they believe this is a hard cap. We've been spending literally hundreds of hours negotiating the specifics of a system, where they're now saying is the equivalent of a hard cap. We've been clear from the beginning from a league standpoint we would prefer a hard cap."

When players offered to reduce their guarantee from 57 percent to 53 percent, Hunter said that would have transferred about $1.1 billion to owners over six years. Now, at 52.5, he said that would grow to more than $1.5 billion.

But even a 50-50 split would be too high for some hardline owners, because it would reduce only $280 million of the $300 million they said they lost last season. Owners initially proposed a BRI split that players said would have had them around 40 percent.

Though they will miss a paycheck on Nov. 15, Hunter said each player would have received a minimum of $100,000 from the escrow money that was returned to them to make up the difference after salaries fell short of the guaranteed 57 percent of revenues last season.

The real losses, though, could be felt by arena staff and other people who work in fields connected to the game. Stern apologized to them in making the announcement.

But Jeff Lee, a 37-year-old cafe owner and Warriors season-ticketholder in the East Bay, said he isn't discouraged about Friday's setback.

"I'm pretty certain that the season's going to start sooner or later," Lee said. "I know when the season starts it's going to be well worth the wait."

Latest developments in the global Occupy protests (AP)

Some of the latest developments in the Occupy protests taking place in cities across the world:

UNITED STATES

TENNESSEE

Tennessee state troopers for the second straight night arrested Wall Street protesters for defying a new nighttime curfew imposed by the Republican governor, in an effort to disband an encampment near the state Capitol in Nashville.

And also for a second time, a night judge dismissed the arrest warrants, saying there was no authority for a curfew.

Occupy Nashville protesters ? including many of the 29 arrested in a pre-dawn raid on Friday ? returned to the Legislative Plaza on Friday evening and remained through the 10 p.m. curfew. Troopers moved in after theater-goers had mostly left the area.

Troopers wouldn't give any details other than that a press release would be issued later Saturday. After the arrested protesters were handcuffed, photographed and put on a bus, one trooper told another at the scene that 26 people had been apprehended.

Protesters remaining at the scene vowed to return Saturday, even if it means more arrests.

CALIFORNIA

Oakland's police chief says he takes responsibility for a crackdown on anti-Wall Street protesters, who have accused police of seriously injuring an Iraq War veteran during a clash earlier this week.

Interim Chief Howard Jordan's defended the officers involved in the effort to drive protesters from a dayslong encampment, saying they used what they believed to be the least amount of force possible to protect themselves.

The plight of Iraq war veteran Scott Olsen, 24 ? who remained hospitalized in fair condition with a fractured skull ? has become a rallying cry at Occupy protests around the world.

Fellow veterans say police fired an object that struck him in the head, but authorities say object has yet to be definitively established, as well as the person responsible for the injury.

Left-wing filmmaker Michael Moore addressed about 1,000 anti-Wall Street protesters in front of Oakland's City Hall on Friday, saying the Occupy movement has changed the national discussion.

Meanwhile, a protest encampment at a plaza near the City Hall grew to about 50 tents, with organizers saying up to a thousand people were in the area late Friday night with very few police in sight.

The Oakland protesters announced a general strike on Nov. 2 where they will be urging banks and corporations to close for the day.

MAINE

Maine groups aligned with the Occupy Wall Street movement plan to rally Saturday.

Occupy Bangor says a rally at downtown Bangor's Peirce Park will be followed by a march. The group says participants are organizing to show solidarity for what it calls a "feeling of mass injustice and inequality in America."

In Portland, Occupy Maine says it will also rally Saturday with speakers, music and a march from Monument Square. The weather forecast was for 6 inches of snow Saturday evening.

NEW MEXICO

Organizers in Albuquerque plan a Saturday march at the site where about two dozen protesters were arrested earlier this week. The "1st Amendment Solidarity March" starts at University of New Mexico's Yale Park.

Protesters were arrested after school officials ordered the four-week-old protest site closed over safety concerns. New Mexico state police raided the spot late Tuesday and have prevented protesters from returning.

Organizers are pressing city officials to allow them to relocate to Robinson Park. Albuquerque protesters met Thursday with Mayor Richard Berry, but Berry did not make a decision. He told protesters he wanted to seek a balance between free speech and public safety.

VERMONT

More than 100 social activists planned to stay the night in City Hall Park in Burlington as they worked to expand into a 24-hour operation.

The Burlington protests began on Sunday but Friday's effort marked the first time the Vermont movement was going to try to go full time, at least initially.

City rules don't allow the park to be used between midnight and 6 a.m. But city officials ruled Friday the protesters could stay, as long as no laws were broken and there were no threats to public safety. The city vowed to take a wait and see approach to enforcement of the camping ban.

MICHIGAN

Participants in the Traverse City protest plan to collect food, clothing and blankets for the needy.

Donations are expected to be given to area nonprofits.

EUROPE

ENGLAND

A part-time chaplain at St. Paul's Cathedral has become the second churchman to resign over the church's attitude to the protest outside the building.

Fraser Dyer said he was "embarrassed" by the decision to take legal action to try to evict the anti-capitalist protesters. Senior clergyman Giles Fraser resigned earlier, saying he feared moves to evict the protesters could end in violence.

Church and local government authorities are separately going to court to try to evict the protesters, though officials have acknowledged it could take weeks or months to get an order to remove the tent city.

As the iconic church reopened after a weeklong closure triggered by the protest, the City of London Corporation said it was launching legal action on the grounds that the protest is an "unreasonable user of the highway." Scores of tents are pitched on the pedestrianized square in front of the cathedral and near a footpath alongside the building.

Kate Middleton: New succession rules could make her mother of Britain?s next queen

Kate Middleton could be the first British royal in centuries to see an eldest daughter become Queen instead of a younger brother.

Under the century-old tradition of male primogeniture, if the eldest child was a girl she would only become queen if none of her younger siblings were girls. Now, with the assent of 16 countries in the Commonwealth, girls will be just as eligible as their brothers, meaning the eldest child will always ascend to the throne.

The change in law, which is expected to soon be formalized in the British parliament, also lifts a ban on Catholic heirs ? a move British Prime Minister David Cameron and Catholic leaders have praised.

Here are five would-be queens who were leap-frogged by their brothers for the throne:

- Christa Case Bryant,?Staff writer

In 1509, Henry VIII took the throne. But if first-born daughters had been eligible to rule, his elder sister Margaret Tudor would have taken power instead.

Margaret, the daughter of an English king and the wife of a Scottish king, made it her main political aim to unite England and Scotland. While Margaret?s life had tragic elements, she ultimately succeeded in her goal ? albeit after her death ? when her great-grandson become King James I of England in 1603. King James united the crowns of England, Scotland, and Ireland, and commissioned the King James version of the Bible ? considered by some scholars as the finest work ever written in the English language.

UK court orders ISP to block Newzbin 2 filesharing site within two weeks, Hollywood smiles

Pirates just can't catch a break these days. Way back in July, a British judge ordered telecom company BT to block its subscribers from visiting a site called Newzbin 2, on the grounds that the ISP had "actual knowledge" of customers using the platform access copyright infringing content. An appeal was soon filed, but yesterday, it was shot down by a high court. Under the order, BT will have 14 days to seal off access to Newzbin 2, and will have to do so on its own dime -- something the provider was aiming to avoid. The decision marks the first time that an ISP has been forced to block access to a filesharing site, something the Motion Picture Association heralded as "a win for the creative sector." BT, meanwhile, didn't have much to say about the ruling, stating only that "it is helpful to have the order now and the clarity that it brings." Less certain, however, is the impact this order will have on future copyright lawsuits and web censorship, in general. Find the ruling in its entirety at the coverage link, below.

Police nab top Gambino mob boss in clinic

A top boss from the Gambino crime clan convicted in the U.S. of selling heroin was rearrested in a Rome clinic Thursday after he checked in for medical tests, police said.

Rosario Gambino, 69 ? convicted by U.S. courts in a Pizza Connection heroin probe and sentenced to 45 years in prison in 1984 ? was deported two years ago to Italy so he could serve a 20-year sentence in a separate drug case.

Italian news reports said an Italian tribunal earlier in the week had ordered him released while his lawyers pursue an appeal with the Court of Cassation, Italy's top criminal court. However, police said they moved to arrest him Thursday after an appeals tribunal in Palermo, Sicily, issued a fresh warrant.

Gambino "was surprised inside a clinic in the capital, where he had sought some tests" for an undisclosed medical problem, Rome police headquarters said in a statement. "He has a long career in the ranks of the Italian-Sicilian Mafia on his resume."

Police who carried out the arrest could not be reached for details Thursday night.

Court officers were closed, but the Italian news agency ANSA said that the Palermo court deemed Gambino a flight risk.

Gambino, an Italian-born New Jersey resident, was considered a top figure in the New York-based crime family led by his late cousin Carlo Gambino.

In 1984, Rosario Gambino was convicted in a multimillion-dollar conspiracy to sell heroin in southern New Jersey and sentenced to 45 years in jail. He was linked to a Pizza Connection case involving a then $1.6 billion heroin- and cocaine-smuggling operation that used pizzerias as fronts in the 1970s and early '80s.

He was released in 2007 and transferred to an immigrant detention center in California to await expulsion. Gambino was wanted in Italy since 1980 in a drug trafficking probe. When he was deported to Italy two years ago, he was served the 1980 warrant signed by Giovanni Falcone, the Sicilian prosecutor who was killed by the Sicilian Mafia in a 1992 bombing.

Police said Gambino was convicted by an Italian court in 1983 of criminal association for drug trafficking and sentenced to 20 years.

Ice Cream Sandwich, Android tablets spur security explosion (Appolicious)

A new iteration of the DroidKungFu Android Trojan has been uncovered, presented as a legitimate app update in order to sneak its way onto your Android phone. It uses a new exploit to gain access to devices. First brought to light by Lookout Mobile Security last week, this new variant, which Lookout calls LeNa, uses social engineering to trick users into giving the installer super-user access on devices. Once deployed, the malware attaches itself to a native system process.

Lookout for Android tablets

Malware threatens the security of end users with cunning agility, as the booming mobile landscape presents an alluring challenge for attackers. The unique environment mobile devices offer can blindside an end user, but it also encourages very specific solutions from dedicated companies, including Lookout.

Just a few days after launching its first security app for iOS, Lookout expanded its Android offering to include tablets. Lookout recognized the security threats for Android very early on, and now they turn to tablets to offer protection and ?find my phone? capabilities for Honeycomb and Ice Cream Sandwich tablets, as well as Wi-Fi-only devices.

?Tablets are susceptible to the same mobile threats as smartphones, though tablets aren't always connected to a mobile network. With this new version of Lookout, we made sure that people can get the same level of protection on their tablets as they have on their smartphones,? said Kevin Mahaffey, Lookout co-Founder and CTO.

Security on ICS

Security is a hot topic for Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, as the OS update provides the perfect opportunity for Google to layer in more protection for its devices. One perk is the ability to fully encrypt your ICS device, locking down all your data behind a personalized PIN. ICS also has a security feature designed to limit the damage that malicious code can cause in the first place, called Address Space Layout Randomization. It rearranges the memory locations for various app components to help prevent attacks.

With global tablet shipments expected to rise, already exceeding notebook sales earlier this year, the tablet landscape merely opens up more doors for attackers and security providers. A few years of experience in the mobile realm can be readily applied to the tablet market, and Google along with third party providers are becoming more proactive in their efforts to instill security features in Android tablets.

State of Ohio intervenes to keep exotic pets in zoo (Reuters)

COLUMBUS, Ohio (Reuters) ? The state of Ohio intervened on Thursday to stop six exotic animals from being transferred back to the widow of the man who released them and dozens of other creatures last week shortly before killing himself.

The Ohio Department of Agriculture said it issued a quarantine order for the three leopards, two monkeys and one grizzly bear currently held at the Columbus Zoo, citing concerns "the animals could be infected with disease as a result of the conditions in which they were reportedly held."

Earlier on Thursday, the zoo said it had been notified by attorneys representing Marian Thompson that she planned to collect the six animals and return them to the couple's farm in Zanesville, Ohio.

Thompson arrived at the zoo on Thursday afternoon but left empty-handed.

A spokesman for Ohio Governor John Kasich said: "The governor's biggest concern is not only the threat to the public health of the people of Zanesville but to the animals themselves."

"And we will use whatever tools are at our disposal to protect both the health of the people and the animals."

Last week, Thompson's husband Terry Thompson set his collection of 56 exotic animals free and then committed suicide.

No note was found with Thompson's body. He had been released late last month from a year-long prison sentence for violating federal gun laws.

The release of the lions, tigers, bears and other animals created havoc around Zanesville and forced authorities to shoot dozens of the animals, including 18 Bengal tigers, which are endangered, as well as numerous adult lions.

Of the 56 animals released, 49 were killed and buried on the farm.

The six animals will continue to live at the Columbus Zoo while the Department of Agriculture decides what to do with them.

Dale Schmidt, president and CEO of the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium, said he was "pleased" with the department's decision. He said zoo officials were concerned about the welfare of the animals.

"They will continue to get the best of care while they are in our custody," Schmidt said.

Wayne Pacelle, the president of the Humane Society of the United States, welcomed Thursday's action by Ohio.

"The sheriff's report shows the animals living in squalid conditions," Pacelle said. "Mr. Thompson had a history of cruelty. There were endless complaints. It would be reckless to allow her to reclaim the animals."

The quarantine will remain in effect indefinitely, officials said. But Thompson can request a legal hearing on the matter within 30 days.

Ohio is one of seven states that does not restrict ownership of such exotic animals. The others are North and South Carolina, Alabama, West Virginia, Nevada and Wisconsin.

Kasich has issued an executive order, asking state agencies to use all available powers to regulate the animals until the legislature passes a law.

Gingrich calls GOP debate bickering unbecoming (AP)

WASHINGTON ? Newt Gingrich says heavy bickering among Republican presidential candidates is a turn-off for Americans already repulsed by Washington political gridlock.

Gingrich tells CBS's "The Early Show" that harsh exchanges between Mitt Romney and Rick Perry at the Las Vegas faceoff were unbecoming.

He says "you have to have some sense of maturity and some sense of seriousness." He adds that "it hurt everybody to have bickering going on the way it was going on in that debate."

Gingrich, who has been unable to pierce the upper tier of Republicans in poll standings, says "the American people deserve a chance to see us act in a mature and responsible way." The former House speaker says he's looking forward to a one-on-one debate early next month in Texas with rival Herman Cain.

On another issue, Gingrich says he understands the frustrations behind the Occupy Wall Street demonstrations but doesn't approve of all the tactics that have been used by the protesters.

Lionel Richie going country with duets album (Reuters)

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) ? Hello! Lionel Richie is going country.

The smooth R&B singer will take to the Country Music Association awards stage next month to perform some of the duets from his upcoming album "Tuskegee" -- named after his Alabama birthplace, organizers said on Wednesday.

Richie, 62, best known for romantic ballads like "Three Times a Lady" and "Endless Love", will sing a country version of his hit song "Dancing on the Ceiling" with Rascal Flatts at televised annual CMA awards show on November 9.

The "Tuskegee" album, due out in March 2012, will feature 13 duets of his biggest hits, including "My Love" with Kenny Chesney, "Easy" with Willie Nelson and "Hello" with Jennifer Nettles.

Richie said the album was a return to his country roots.

"I was born and raised in Tuskegee, Alabama. I am a country boy and proud of it. To do this project just felt natural," the singer-songwriter said in a statement.

Richie has earned five Grammys, an Oscar, and has had more than 20 top 10 hits in a career that started with Motown Records more than 40 years ago.

The "Tuskegee" album is the latest in a series of recordings that have teamed older artists with younger singers, including crooner Tony Bennett's recent chart-topping "Duets II" release which included collaborations with Lady Gaga and the late Amy Winehouse.

Style Investing Revisited - A Disciplined Approach Means More ...

From: GuruFocus Updates -

1:12pm - October 25, 2011

By gurufocus. Over time much has been written about style investing-growth versus value-within the small-cap universe. In fact, investors often rely on style indexes such as the Russell 2000 Value Index and Russell 2000 Growth Index as proxies for a particular style and/or performance pattern, such as moving to value in anticipation of a bear market or growth in expectation of a bull. While this is certainly easy and convenient, especially for performance comparisons, style indexes are often more about a particular type of company or narrow set of criteria as opposed to a specific investment approach. Most style indexes use simple screens to determine whether a company should be classified as value or growth. Inherent in this methodology are certain biases regarding the investable universe. For example, financials (primarily banks) and utilities are almost always classified as value st...

Libya gives Gaddafi inglorious secret burial (Reuters)

TRIPOLI (Reuters) ? Muammar Gaddafi and his son Mo'tassim were buried in a secret desert location on Tuesday, five days after the deposed Libyan leader was captured, killed and put on grisly public display.

"He (Gaddafi) has just been buried now in the desert along with his son," National Transitional Council (NTC) commander Abdel Majid Mlegta told Reuters by telephone.

Gaddafi's cleric, Khaled Tantoush, who was captured with him, prayed over the rotting bodies before they were taken from the compound in the coastal city of Misrata, where they had been on show, and handed to two NTC loyalists for burial, he said.

The NTC had worried many outsiders by displaying the corpses in a meat locker in the fiercely anti-Gaddafi city of Misrata until their decaying state forced them on Monday to call a halt.

Under pressure from Western allies, the NTC promised the same day to investigate how Gaddafi and his son were killed. Mobile phone footage shows both alive after their capture. The former leader was seen being mocked, beaten and abused before he died, in what NTC officials say was crossfire.

The saga has made Western allies of Libya's interim leadership queasy about the prospects for the rule of law and stable government in the post-Gaddafi era.

"I laughed when I saw him being beaten as he deserved to be. And I laugh again now that I know he is in the ground," said Emani Zaid, 20, a student in Tripoli. "If the men who buried him are true free Libyans, they can keep the secret (of his grave)."

Determined to prevent Gaddafi's grave from becoming a shrine for his supporters, the NTC wants to keep its location secret, refusing custody to his tribe, many of whom live in Sirte.

The prayers for the dead were attended by two of Gaddafi's cousins, Mansour Dhao Ibrahim, once leader of the feared People's Guard, and Ahmed Ibrahim. Both were captured with him after a NATO air strike hit a convoy of vehicles trying to break out of Sirte, Gaddafi's home town, just after it fell.

"The NTC officials were handed the body after the sheikh completed the early morning ceremony and are taking him somewhere very far away into the desert," Mlegta said.

"THROW HIM IN A HOLE"

For Ali Azzarog, 47, an engineer, it was good riddance.

"Throw him in a hole, in the sea, in garbage. No matter. He is lower than a donkey or a dog and only foreigners say they care about how we killed him. And they are lying," he said.

Mohammed al-Sharif, a 22-year-old describing himself as an aspiring writer, said: "Let the dust of the desert sweep over the hole where he was buried ... Then the name 'Muammar' can be forgotten and our children will never know of this time."

Libyans rose up against Gaddafi's 42-year rule in February, defying a violent response that was parried by NATO air power under a United Nations mandate to protect civilians.

The 69-year-old strongman's death ended eight months of war that had dragged on in Sirte and elsewhere even after the NTC's ragtag militias captured the capital, Tripoli, in August.

Hatred of Gaddafi unified his disparate opponents, who may now tussle for power during a planned transition to democracy in a broken nation with regional and tribal rivalries to overcome.

"Leaders from different regions, cities, want to negotiate over everything -- posts in government, budgets for cities, dissolving militias," said one senior NTC official in Tripoli, though he defended this as a healthy expression of freedom.

At times, Gaddafi's body appeared to have become a macabre bargaining chip for Misrata, which endured a pitiless war-time siege, and whose leaders now demand a big say in the new Libya.

Fears that Gaddafi's sons might wage an Iraq-style insurgency have faded since the deaths of Mo'tassim and his brother Khamis, a military commander, who was killed earlier.

But well-armed fighters in the former Gaddafi stronghold of Bani Walid, which fell to the NTC this month, told Reuters they were planning to keep up their struggle.

"MASS EXECUTION"

Abuses apparently committed by both sides in the civil war may also impede reconciliation. New York-based Human Rights Watch urged the NTC on Monday to probe an "apparent mass execution" of 53 people, apparently Gaddafi loyalists, whom it found dead, some with their hands bound, at a Sirte hotel.

In Tripoli, a 33-year-old waiter, who said he was too scared to give his name, praised what he said was Gaddafi's courage.

"If you say Gaddafi died like a coward, you are wrong. He died proud like a lion. He said he would never leave Libya and he did not leave. Fight, fight, fight. I was not a Gaddafi supporter before this revolution but when I saw his bravery, I knew he was the only man for Libya," he said.

One of Gaddafi's sons, the enigmatic Saif al-Islam, remains on the run. Once viewed as a moderate reformer, Saif vowed to help his father crush his enemies once the revolt began.

An NTC official said Saif al-Islam was in the remote southern desert near Niger and Algeria and was set to flee Libya using a fase passport.

He said Gaddafi's former intelligence chief Abdullah al-Senussi who, like Saif al-Islam, is wanted by the International Criminal Court, was involved in the escape plan.

"The region is very difficult to monitor and encircle," the official said of Saif al-Islam's purported whereabouts.

In Niger, there was no official comment on Saif al-Islam, but the government there has repeatedly signalled it would fulfil its responsibilities to the International Criminal Court which wants to try Gaddafi's son for crimes against humanity.

"The instructions in Niger are very clear: if this son of Gaddafi enters Niger, he must be arrested and placed immediately in the hands of the authorities because there is an international arrest warrant for him," a Nigerien military source said.

Gaddafi's death allowed the NTC to declare Libya's "liberation" on Sunday in Benghazi, the seat of the revolt.

NTC Chairman Mustafa Abdel Jalil also announced that Libya had "taken Islamic sharia as the source of legislation".

Many rejoicing Libyans brushed off unease among human rights groups and Western capitals about the manner of Gaddafi's death.

Until the public was finally denied access on Monday, fighters were still ushering sightseers into the chilled room where the bodies of Gaddafi, Mo'tassim and his former army chief lay, their flesh darkening and leaking fluids.

The U.N. human rights arm has joined the Gaddafi family in seeking an inquiry into his killing. The NTC promised one on Monday, saying most Libyans had hoped to see Gaddafi on trial.

Some Libyans are also uncomfortable at the way Gaddafi was killed and his body treated.

"I regret it, really," said lawyer Sawani Ghanem, 30, adding that Gaddafi had tainted Libya as a land of terrorists. "We should have tried to show the world we could be more humane and aspire to change."

How to make an iPhone look like HAL 9000's nice sister

ThinkGeek

By Rosa Golijan

It's no secret that I have a love/hate?relationship with Siri?? the virtual assistant built into my iPhone 4S?? but even I have to admit that she's a real peach in comparison to an artificial intelligence personality such as HAL 9000 of "Space Odyssey" fame.

That doesn't mean that I wouldn't get a kick out of making her look like that evil AI's nicer sister though. And thanks to the folks at ThinkGeek, I can do just that.

You see, those clever?? and occasionally silly?? individuals have decided to create something they call IRIS 9000.

IRIS 9000 is basically a voice control module for the iPhone 4S. It comes with a buit-in microphone which can pick up your voice from a distance as well as a remote control which can be used to trigger the Siri feature from up to 50 feet away.?Oh, and as a bonus: There's a creepy red "eye" on the accessory which flickers and glows along with Siri's voice.

To see how all that looks in action, take a peek at this video demo:

IRIS 9000 is priced at $59.99 and should become available in early 2012.

Rangers on brink of title after Game 5 win

Texas rallies past Cardinals late, gets winning run on Napoli double

By BEN WALKER

updated 11:40 p.m. ET Oct. 24, 2011

ARLINGTON, Texas - Call it lucky, weird or just plain goofy. Whatever, Mike Napoli and the Texas Rangers are suddenly one win away from their first World Series championship.

And the St. Louis Cardinals? Perhaps next time they should try texting the bullpen.

In a Game 5 that took several odd twists at the end, Texas turned a grounder that got away and a telephone mix-up into its biggest victory ever. Napoli delivered the latest clutch hit of his charmed season, lining a tiebreaking two-run double in the eighth inning that sent the Rangers past St. Louis 4-2 on Monday night for a 3-2 edge.

Next up for Texas, a trip to St. Louis and a chance to capture that elusive crown.

"We certainly won't be out there thinking about we've just got to win one game," Texas manager Ron Washington said. "I've been there before, and that doesn't work."

Napoli's go-ahead stroke came off Marc Rzepczynski, right after a potential double-play ball slipped away from the St. Louis reliever. More bruising, at least to the Cardinals: Rzepczynski wasn't even supposed to face Napoli.

Cardinals manager Tony La Russa said he called down to the bullpen earlier in the inning and wanted Rzepczynski and closer Jason Motte to get ready. Instead, bullpen coach Derek Lilliquist heard only Rzepczynski at first. La Russa called again to ask for Motte and this time Lilliquist heard "Lynn," as in reliever Lance Lynn.

"I was more frustrated the double-play ball went off the glove and the fact we had numerous chances to add runs. That's probably more frustrating," La Russa said.

"The other part just happens. I mean, it's loud down there, and sometimes you call down there and you have to wait until the crowd and a guy gets up late. I mean, this is not unusual," he said.

Said Lilliquist: "You get a bunch of people, and it's loud."

"He wanted Motte going easy to back Zep up and I thought I heard Lynn. It transpired from there," he said. "It's basically miscommunication. It was loud. A lot of places are like that. The phone is as good as any phone anywhere."

The right-handed Napoli, meanwhile, was dialed in to face the left-handed Rzepczynski with the bases loaded, one out and the score 2-all.

"I didn't really see anybody warming up in the bullpen, so I kind of figured I was going to face him," Napoli said.

"Just trying to get something to the outfield, you know, get a sac fly, get that run across the board," he said. "I was trying to stay short and I got a pitch I could handle over the middle of the plate and put it in the gap."

Texas will try to wrap it up in Game 6 on Wednesday night in St. Louis, with Colby Lewis facing Jaime Garcia. The weather forecast for Busch Stadium is daunting, calling for rain and temperatures around 50.

After Napoli put Texas ahead, the slugging catcher capped off his night of double duty by throwing out a would-be base stealer in the ninth as Albert Pujols struck out.

"Pujols is going to put it in play, he's a good contact hitter," Napoli said, "and they were just starting the runner, 3-2. As soon as I got it, I just got rid of it and put it on the bag."

In the seventh, Napoli threw out Allen Craig at second with Pujols at the plate. Apparently, Pujols put on his own hit-and-run, then didn't swing.

If the Rangers eventually do win it all, the Texas fans who stood and chanted Napoli's name may forever remember his two-run hit.

If the Cardinals lose, there's no doubt which play will stick with La Russa for a long, long time.

It was tied when Texas put runners on first and second with one out in the eighth, and Rzepczynski was summoned. David Murphy followed with a bouncer back to the mound, a possible inning-ending double play in the making.

But the ball appeared to glance off Rzepczynski's hand and trickled harmlessly away for a single that loaded the bases. In the dugout, La Russa immediately threw his hands to his head, a true "Oh, no!" moment.

Napoli, who came close to a three-run homer in his previous at-bat and hit a big homer in a Game 4 win, sent a drive up the alley against the pitcher with the nickname "Scrabble." The double off Rzepczynski sure spelled good things for Texas, with the excitable Washington waving the runners around from the dugout.

Darren Oliver earned the win and Neftali Feliz closed for his second save of the Series and sixth of the postseason.

Adrian Beltre and Mitch Moreland hit solo home runs off Cardinals ace Chris Carpenter, helping Texas come back from an early 2-0 deficit.

Later, it became a battle of the bullpens and Texas prevailed.

Octavio Dotel gave up a leadoff double to Young in the eighth, struck out Beltre and intentionally walked Nelson Cruz. That left it up to Rzepczynski, and the game quickly slipped away.

La Russa appeared stunned by the turnaround. Later in the eighth, because of the mix-up, he brought in Lynn and had him issue an intentional walk to the only batter he faced. Motte eventually ended the inning, but it was too late.

Fittingly, Napoli had a role in the final play. Lance Berkman struck out and the ball hit Napoli's shin guard and trickled up the first base line, where the catcher picked it up and tossed to first base to end the game.

Pujols drew three intentional walks, including a pass with two outs and none on in the seventh. The St. Louis slugger then nearly used his legs to put his team ahead.

Pujols was running hard on a 3-2 pitch that Matt Holliday hit for a single to left-center. Pujols chugged around the bags and third base coach Jose Oquendo initially waved him home, only to put up a late stop sign.

Would Pujols have been safe on shortstop Elvis Andrus' wide throw to the plate? Maybe. But it became moot when Berkman was intentionally walked to load the bases and David Freese flied out against Alexi Ogando.

Beltre's homer made it 2-all with two outs in the sixth. He dropped to one knee after following through on a meaty cut. He connected on a big curve from Carpenter, who had easily handled Josh Hamilton and Young to start the inning.

Beltre's other homers this October came in a bunch. He hit three in a first-round playoff game at Tampa Bay.

Napoli almost gave Texas a cushion later in the inning. With the crowd standing and chanting his name as "Nap-Oh-Lee" flashed on the scoreboard, the catcher's bid for a three-run homer was caught on the warning track in right-center field, just shy of the 407-foot mark.

The homer let Texas ace C.J. Wilson avoid becoming the first pitcher to lose four times in a single postseason. The eccentric lefty who alternates red and blue gloves between starts had another uneven outing, working around five walks.

Wilson walked six while losing Game 1 to Carpenter and the Cardinals.

Moreland atoned for some glove woes with a home run in the third, hitting a drive halfway up the second deck in right field.

The Cardinals scored twice in the second, cashing in two leadoff walks sandwiched around a wild pitch.

Yadier Molina notched his fifth RBI of the Series with a single that left fielder Murphy overran and fumbled for an error. Skip Schumaker followed with an RBI grounder to first that Moreland boxed around, preventing any chance at a double play.

NOTES: Playing on his 34th birthday, Rafael Furcal led off the game with a liner that 3B Beltre backhanded. Furcal started Game 4 the same way. ... Wilson matched the postseason record for walks - 19 - set by Cleveland's Jaret Wright in 1997. Wilson's 11 walks in the World Series are the most since Allie Reynolds in 1951. ... Pujols flied out on a 3-0 pitch to end the first. He swung at 15 of 37 pitches on 3-0 counts this season, going 4 for 8 on the balls he put in play. ... Cardinals reliever Arthur Rhodes turned 42. He's the oldest player to celebrate a birthday while playing in the Series. Jim Palmer was 38 in 1983.
